Thursday’s trading session delivered contrasting signals across US equity markets as market participants digested corporate earnings results and new employment data.
The Nasdaq Composite advanced 0.5% after initially opening in negative territory, propelled by a significant reversal in semiconductor equities. The iShares Semiconductor ETF surged 2% following a steep morning decline. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, despite a strong opening, struggled to maintain positive momentum and hovered near unchanged levels. The S&P 500 registered a modest 0.2% gain.

Although the Dow touched record territory during early trading, it encountered resistance from several large-cap constituents. Shares of Salesforce, International Business Machines, UnitedHealth Group, and Visa created headwinds for the price-weighted benchmark.
AI-Related Stocks Face Earnings Pressure
Market participants have maintained intense scrutiny on artificial intelligence stocks, searching for evidence that massive capital investments are generating returns. Concerns about AI infrastructure spending and elevated valuations triggered substantial price movements for multiple technology companies.
AMD shares tumbled more than 7% in response to its quarterly results. Sandisk and Western Digital similarly experienced notable declines. By midday, the iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF remained down 3%.
Nvidia proved to be the exception. The stock extended Wednesday’s rally after SpaceX revealed plans to utilize Nvidia chips exclusively. SpaceX equity also jumped 5% from all-time lows as an insider lockup period concluded.
Employment Data Previews Friday’s Critical Jobs Report
Two significant labor market indicators emerged Thursday morning, setting the stage for Friday’s July employment figures.
Data from Challenger, Gray and Christmas indicated July layoffs declined to their lowest point in two years. Additionally, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported initial unemployment claims totaled 199,000 for the week concluded August 1, virtually unchanged from the previous week.
These reports collectively suggested a stable employment environment ahead of Friday’s highly anticipated jobs data.
Geopolitical factors also maintained trader caution. Gold valuations rose to multi-week peaks as uncertainty persisted. Oil remained anchored near $80 per barrel following Iran’s announcement of a tentative agreement with Oman establishing a temporary maritime corridor through the Strait of Hormuz.
Esmail Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, indicated the two countries would complete the arrangement barring external interference.
Ongoing sector rotation continued generating intraday volatility. While semiconductor stocks recovered from morning weakness, software-related names sustained pressure. This type of sector-specific fluctuation has characterized recent market activity.
The Friday employment report looms as the next significant catalyst for market direction.
