Shares of SoFi Technologies are currently changing hands near $17.65, reflecting a recent decline of 3.55%, yet a pair of analyst upgrades are drawing attention to significant appreciation opportunities for the fintech platform.
Among Wall Street analysts covering SOFI, Citi’s Peter Christiansen stands as the most optimistic. His $30 valuation target translates to approximately 70% appreciation potential based on current market prices.
According to Christiansen, the second-quarter performance demonstrated a meaningful transition toward sustainable expansion. The financial technology company exceeded projections for revenue, EBITDA, and asset quality metrics in its July 29 earnings release.
Customer acquisition and product penetration emerged as particularly impressive data points. Cross-buying reached 51%, while products per member climbed to a record 1.54. Asset quality trends showed improvement across the entire loan portfolio.
Christiansen characterized SoFi as beginning a “sustainable operating leverage expansion phase,” highlighted by unprecedented origination volumes, enhanced profit margins, and superior credit performance all aligning positively.
Second Quarter Results Support Optimistic Outlook
Adjusted quarterly revenue totaled $1.2 billion, marking a 40% year-over-year jump. Loan originations achieved an all-time high of $14.8 billion. Both delinquency rates and charge-off levels demonstrated sequential improvements.
Christiansen increased his 2027 revenue projection by approximately 10%, anticipating net interest margin performance to exceed his previous forecasts.
His $30 valuation relies on a 30 to 35 times GAAP price-to-earnings ratio, justified by projected 35% three-year EBITDA compound growth. Emerging revenue streams including loan platform partnerships, cryptocurrency offerings, money transfer capabilities, Cash Coach features, and private equity fund accessibility are anticipated to drive additional operating leverage going forward.
Net profit margins are widening from 12% to 17% during the current year, although return on tangible equity remains considerably below SoFi’s long-range objective of 20% to 30%.
Piper Sandler Adds Optimistic Coverage
Piper Sandler recently took action on SOFI, launching coverage with an Overweight recommendation and establishing a $22 price objective. This announcement propelled shares higher by 2.13% during premarket hours.
The $22 valuation represents approximately 25 times SoFi’s projected 2027 earnings. Piper Sandler’s investment thesis centers on elevated banking product adoption and robust multi-product engagement among an affluent customer demographic.
The firm highlighted that product count increased 43% year over year in the second quarter, outpacing the 35% expansion in total membership. This differential indicates existing customers are purchasing supplementary offerings beyond their initial lending product.
Lending operations continue to contribute 52% of total revenue. The Financial Services division represents 39%, while Technology operations account for roughly 9%.
Piper Sandler projects 22% revenue compound annual growth and 27% adjusted EBITDA compound annual growth extending through 2028. The firm anticipates revenue of $4.89 billion for the current year and $6.14 billion for the following year, with corresponding earnings per share estimates of $0.63 and $0.88.
SoFi maintained a total capital ratio of 18.8% at the holding company level and 15.3% at the banking subsidiary, comfortably exceeding the 10.5% regulatory threshold.
Piper Sandler identified the Technology business unit as a variable worth monitoring, observing that expansion could accelerate following Chime’s exit from the Galileo platform.
The aggregate Wall Street consensus rating remains at Hold, derived from six Buy ratings, six Hold ratings, and three Sell ratings issued during the past three months. The mean price target stands at $20.23, suggesting approximately 14.6% upside potential.
