On July 26, 2026, Storj Labsāa provider of decentralized cloud storage solutionsāinitiated Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. The petition was submitted to the US Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of West Virginia, assigned case number 5:26-bk-00512.
According to company statements, the financial difficulties originated from historical liabilities associated with an earlier operational period. Kaloyan Raev, serving as Storj’s director of software engineering, characterized the current business model as “strong and right-sized,” but constrained by previous financial obligations.
Prior to this development, Storj successfully secured approximately $35 million in capital. This figure encompasses a $30 million STORJ token offering concluded in May 2017, a $3 million seed financing round disclosed in February 2017, and supplementary equity investments amounting to roughly $5 million distributed across six separate funding rounds.
The bankruptcy petition arrived approximately nine months following Inveniam’s October 2025 announcement to acquire Storj Labs. The data infrastructure firm confirmed its commitment to maintaining business support throughout the reorganization proceedings.
Service Continuity Maintained Throughout Chapter 11 Process
Company representatives emphasized that customer-facing services should experience no disruption during the Chapter 11 proceedings. The platform operates through autonomous storage node providers who receive STORJ token compensation for contributing storage capacity and bandwidth resources.
Management stressed that the STORJ token’s functional role within the ecosystem remains unaffected by the bankruptcy filing. At the time of announcement, CoinGecko data showed the token trading near $0.072, with minimal immediate price volatility following the disclosure.

As part of the reorganization strategy, Storj Labs is consolidating its business operations. The company plans to divest previous acquisitions and peripheral business activities that don’t align with its core mission.
Equity Participation Pathway Proposed for Token Holders
Management has indicated intentions to develop a framework permitting STORJ token holders to obtain ownership positions in the restructured entity. The proposed ownership configuration may also encompass management team members, existing investors, community participants, and incoming investors.
Specific implementation details remain undisclosed, including eligibility criteria, potential token snapshot requirements, lockup provisions, or the percentage of equity available for distribution. Any proposed arrangement requires both creditor consensus and judicial approval before implementation.
This strategy represents a departure from certain recent cryptocurrency insolvency proceedings. Bitcoin mining operation Poolin, which similarly filed Chapter 11 in July, is pursuing a court-supervised liquidation of its Texas-based mining infrastructure. Movement Labs submitted a Subchapter V filing in July, reporting potential liabilities up to $10 million.
Storj Labs has yet to release a comprehensive reorganization blueprint, complete creditor listing, or definitive ownership framework. Subsequent court documentation is anticipated to illuminate the company’s total debt obligations and the specific participation mechanisms for token holders.
