TLDRs;
- Strategy’s stock surged as Bitcoin’s rebound added billions to its massive cryptocurrency treasury.
- Bitcoin’s recovery narrowed Strategy’s treasury deficit while strengthening its potential for future purchases.
- MSTR outperformed Bitcoin as its latest share issuance became more favorable for future fundraising.
- Strategy preserved cash reserves despite Bitcoin’s rally, keeping investors focused on its next acquisition.
Strategy (MSTR) stock surged 7.81% on Thursday as a sharp Bitcoin rebound significantly improved the value of the company’s massive cryptocurrency treasury.
The rally pushed Strategy shares to $112.39, outperforming Bitcoin’s 4.97% daily gain and narrowing the gap between the value of its Bitcoin holdings and cumulative acquisition cost by roughly $7.74 billion.
The move marked a notable shift for the Bitcoin-focused company after a period in which falling cryptocurrency prices had placed its treasury below its aggregate purchase cost. With Bitcoin climbing back above $70,000, Strategy’s 840,447 BTC holdings recovered billions of dollars in market value without the company purchasing a single additional coin.
Bitcoin Rebound Changes Treasury Picture
Bitcoin was trading at approximately $72,707.63 at 18:50 EDT on August 20. At that price, Strategy’s Bitcoin holdings were worth an estimated $61.11 billion, compared with a reported cumulative acquisition cost of approximately $63.36 billion.
That left the company with an illustrative unrealized gap of around $2.25 billion.
The improvement was substantial compared with Monday, when Bitcoin was near $63,500. At that earlier price, Strategy’s holdings were worth roughly $53.37 billion, leaving the treasury about $9.99 billion below its cumulative acquisition cost.
The move from $63,500 to $72,707.63 therefore increased the estimated value of the unchanged Bitcoin portfolio by approximately $7.74 billion.
MSTR Outpaces Bitcoin Gains
Strategy’s stock performance was even stronger than Bitcoin’s rebound. MSTR climbed 7.81% to close at $112.39, while Bitcoin gained 4.97% over the same period.
The resulting 1.57-to-1 move ratio highlights the leverage investors continue to associate with Strategy’s Bitcoin-heavy balance sheet. When Bitcoin rises, the market can place a higher value on Strategy’s ability to generate additional exposure through its capital markets strategy.
Trading activity remained substantial, with about 46.93 million MSTR shares changing hands during Thursday’s session. Although volume was 4.6% lower than Wednesday, the stock still attracted considerable investor attention.
The rally also put MSTR well above the implied net proceeds received from its most recent common-stock offering. Strategy sold 3,458,866 shares for $333.7 million in net proceeds, equivalent to approximately $96.48 per share after commissions.
With MSTR closing at $112.39, the stock was $15.91, or about 16.5%, above that implied issuance price.
Strategy Keeps Cash Reserves
Despite the Bitcoin rebound, Strategy did not use its latest equity proceeds to purchase more Bitcoin during the referenced period.
Instead, the company directed $149.1 million toward increasing its U.S. dollar holdings, allocated $132.2 million to redeem STRC preferred securities and used another $52.4 million to fund STRC dividends.
That allocation reflects a focus on maintaining liquidity and meeting obligations tied to Strategy’s preferred securities and debt. The company’s dollar reserve increased to approximately $4.8 billion, including unsettled proceeds from its automated share-sale program.
Executive Chairman Michael Saylor said, “Strategy added $150M to its USD Reserve and repurchased $132M of STRC.”
The decision is significant because Strategy’s Bitcoin-buying strategy depends heavily on its ability to access capital markets on favorable terms. A higher MSTR share price can allow the company to raise capital while issuing comparatively fewer shares, potentially improving the economics of future Bitcoin acquisitions.
Chief Executive Phong Le has also indicated that Strategy intends to resume Bitcoin purchases during the year, with the timing dependent partly on capital-market conditions.
Investors Watch Future Bitcoin Buys
The latest rally has therefore reopened the debate over Strategy’s next Bitcoin purchase. If MSTR continues trading above the effective price of recent stock offerings, the company could have greater flexibility to raise capital for additional acquisitions.
However, the strategy remains closely tied to Bitcoin’s price. A renewed cryptocurrency downturn could quickly reduce the market value of Strategy’s holdings and weaken the economics of additional equity issuance.
Analyst expectations also reflect that uncertainty. Of 18 ratings compiled by MarketBeat, 13 were Buy, three were Hold, one was Strong Buy and one was Sell. The average price target stood at $242.81, implying substantial upside from the August 20 closing price.
Yet the target range was exceptionally broad, stretching from $54 to $473. That spread illustrates the degree to which MSTR’s outlook depends on assumptions about Bitcoin prices, capital raising, dilution and the cost of servicing preferred securities.
Strategy’s underlying software business remains comparatively small relative to its Bitcoin treasury operation. Second-quarter revenue from the software division increased 6.9% to $122.4 million, while gross margin declined 2.2 percentage points to 66.6%.
For investors, the central question remains whether Bitcoin can sustain its recovery. Thursday’s rally sharply reduced Strategy’s treasury gap and strengthened the company’s financing position, but the improvement remains largely market-driven and unrealized.
For now, the combination of a higher Bitcoin price and stronger MSTR valuation has once again made Strategy’s Bitcoin accumulation model more attractive. The next major test will be whether the company converts that improved market position into another round of Bitcoin purchases.
