Key Highlights
- Payments powerhouse Stripe negotiating approximately $10 billion purchase of OpenRouter
- OpenRouter enables seamless transitions between AI models from companies including OpenAI and Anthropic
- The New York-based company had a $1.3 billion valuation in its most recent funding round in May 2026
- Stripe simultaneously exploring a separate acquisition bid for PayPal worth approximately $53 billion
- Several major technology firms considered bids for OpenRouter before Stripe became the leading candidate
Stripe, currently commanding a $159 billion valuation, has entered advanced negotiations to purchase OpenRouter, an innovative New York-based platform enabling developers to access and toggle between various artificial intelligence models. Sources with knowledge of the discussions indicate the transaction could reach approximately $10 billion.
Launched in 2023, OpenRouter has built a comprehensive marketplace featuring hundreds of large language models. The platform empowers users to evaluate and transition between offerings from OpenAI, Anthropic, and various free open-weight options. OpenRouter’s revenue model involves charging a percentage markup on each model’s base price ā a framework that mirrors traditional payment processing operations.
According to PitchBook data, the company achieved a $1.3 billion valuation during its May 2026 funding round. Notable backers include Menlo Ventures alongside CapitalG, the investment division of Google parent company Alphabet.
While an announcement could materialize in the near term, negotiations remain fluid and could ultimately collapse. Prior to Stripe’s emergence as the frontrunner, multiple prominent tech corporations had explored potential bids for the AI routing specialist.
Expanding Beyond Traditional Payments
Stripe has been strategically diversifying beyond its traditional payment processing operations. The company announced plans earlier this year to develop infrastructure supporting both AI applications and stablecoin-based transactions.
“As tokens become increasingly fungible with money, streaming payments in real time is an important part of Stripe’s economic infrastructure for AI,” Stripe said in a statement earlier this year.
The two companies already maintain a business relationship, with OpenRouter leveraging Stripe’s platform to handle customer payment processing.
CEO Alex Atallah has drawn direct parallels between OpenRouter’s operational approach and Stripe’s business framework. Both enterprises function as intermediaries in transactional ecosystems ā Stripe facilitating monetary exchanges while OpenRouter enables AI model consumption.
Growing Demand for AI Model Switching Solutions
Enterprises are progressively adopting multi-model strategies to manage expenditures and reduce reliance on individual AI providers. This shift has created substantial market opportunities for AI routing platforms.
Competition in this sector is intensifying rapidly. Cursor unveiled its own routing solution just days ago. Ramp, the corporate expense platform valued at $44 billion, is developing comparable functionality. Databricks has also introduced similar features to its platform.
In parallel, Stripe is exploring another major acquisition ā a potential PayPal purchase in partnership with private equity firm Advent International. The partnership submitted an unsolicited proposal valuing PayPal near $53 billion, though PayPal’s leadership deemed the offer insufficient. Stripe and Advent continue deliberating their strategy.
Should the OpenRouter transaction reach completion, it would represent one of 2025’s most significant AI infrastructure acquisitions.
