- All seven stocks declined, with Tesla plummeting 14% and Alphabet sliding more than 7%

July 23 marked a devastating session for the Magnificent Seven tech giants, with the group collectively erasing approximately $900 billion in market capitalization in their most punishing single-day decline since April 2025. The selloff was universal across all seven members, though Tesla and Alphabet absorbed the most severe damage.

Tesla experienced a brutal 14% decline following its quarterly earnings announcement, with the electric vehicle giant’s market value contracting by approximately $200 billion in a single session. Alphabet suffered a more than 7% drop, also triggered by its earnings disclosure.
The Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF declined over 4% during the session, mirroring the widespread liquidation across the tech elite.
Alphabet delivered impressive revenue figures and disclosed substantial backlog in its cloud computing segment. However, the market responded negatively to the company’s expanding capital allocation toward artificial intelligence infrastructure development.
Mark Mahaney, senior managing director at Evercore ISI, clarified the evolving sentiment among market participants. He noted that capital is now flowing toward businesses benefiting from AI expenditures rather than those making the investments themselves.
The Rationale Behind Alphabet’s Selloff
Alphabet’s capital expenditure strategy exposed an emerging fault line within the artificial intelligence investment thesis. Market participants are retreating from infrastructure builders and reallocating capital toward component suppliers.
Memory semiconductor manufacturers emerged as beneficiaries of this rotation. Equities in Micron, SK Hynix, and Sandisk all advanced during the session as investors positioned them as primary beneficiaries of accelerating AI infrastructure spending.
Tesla similarly signaled substantial artificial intelligence investment commitments. The automaker is accelerating development of autonomous robotaxi services and robotics platforms, though both initiatives remain developmental.
Wall Street Perspectives
Brent Schutte, chief investment officer at Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management, advised Yahoo Finance that portfolio managers should consider broadening exposure into more attractively valued equities.
He emphasized prioritizing companies generating tangible earnings currently, rather than those dependent on speculative future scenarios that remain uncertain. He cited Tesla as representative of stocks whose valuations have long been sustained by forward-looking narratives.
The liquidation follows an extended period of robust returns for the majority of Magnificent Seven constituents. The collection had largely recovered from the tariff-induced volatility that disrupted markets during April 2025.
April’s decline had represented the group’s previous worst single-session performance. Thursday’s rout now equals or surpasses that benchmark in magnitude.
Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, and Nvidia all declined in tandem with Tesla and Alphabet, though their contractions were more moderate.
Nvidia retreated approximately 1.5% while Microsoft declined roughly 2%. The losses were widespread yet disproportionate, with Tesla and Alphabet bearing the most substantial declines.
Thursday’s destruction underscores the acute sensitivity large-capitalization technology stocks maintain to earnings announcements and forward expenditure projections, especially regarding artificial intelligence initiatives.
