Shares of Tempus AI are climbing nearly 24% during Wednesday’s session, reaching approximately $59.64, following a significant Phase 3 clinical trial announcement from Merck and Moderna regarding their cancer vaccine collaboration.
The market reaction was swift and pronounced. The company is currently finalizing its $1.5 billion acquisition of Personalis, a provider of gene-sequencing technology that serves as the foundation for Moderna’s cancer vaccine development efforts. With positive Phase 3 trial results now confirmed, the strategic rationale and financial value of this acquisition have strengthened considerably.
TEM reached an intraday peak of $59.04 during morning trading before continuing its ascent. The current price represents a substantial recovery from the 52-week low of $40.77.
Today’s surge isn’t occurring in isolation. Multiple favorable developments have emerged for the company throughout recent weeks.
On July 30, Tempus AI announced its inaugural quarterly GAAP net profit of $5.6 million. This marked a dramatic turnaround from the $42.8 million loss recorded during the comparable period one year prior.
The company generated $382.5 million in revenue, representing a 22% increase compared to the prior year. Subsequently, management elevated its full-year 2026 revenue outlook to a range between $1.595 billion and $1.605 billion, while projecting Adjusted EBITDA of approximately $65 million.
Heavy Short Interest Amplifies Movement
Over 26% of the company’s available float is currently held in short positions. This substantial short interest level can transform positive momentum into explosive price action. When shares begin rising, short sellers must purchase shares to close their positions, creating additional buying pressure that accelerates the upward trend.
On August 4, research published in Nature Medicine confirmed the effectiveness of TEM’s PRISM2 AI platform as a highly accurate tool for cancer diagnosis and determining patient prognosis. This peer-reviewed validation provided crucial third-party verification of the company’s flagship technology.
Just two days following that publication, on August 6, Tempus AI unveiled a strategic collaboration with CellCarta, establishing Tempus as a commercial laboratory partner within CellCarta’s oncology companion diagnostics ecosystem.
The company’s data licensing segment continues showing robust expansion. Management reported a 36% year-over-year increase in data licensing agreements with pharmaceutical companies including Merck and Gilead.
Wall Street Perspective
Market conditions remain generally supportive. The S&P 500 has advanced 0.4% while the Nasdaq has edged up 0.1% today, though these broader indices aren’t the primary catalyst behind TEM’s substantial gains.
Wall Street analysts currently assign TEM a Moderate Buy consensus rating, reflecting eight Buy recommendations and seven Hold ratings issued during the previous three months. The average analyst price target stands at $62.15.
Prior to today’s dramatic rally, TEM stock had already appreciated 8% over the preceding three-month period.
The consensus price target of $62.15 suggests approximately 4% additional upside potential from present trading levels.
