Uber implemented a significant reduction in its customer support workforce this Wednesday, eliminating 10% of positions while pointing to operational streamlining and accelerated artificial intelligence deployment.
The workforce reduction targeted the company’s community operations division. Additionally, Uber instructed remote employees within the impacted department to transition to centralized office locations, consistent with its office return mandate.
UBER shares declined 1.71% following the announcement, hovering near the $70 mark. The stock has experienced a roughly 14% downturn since January and remains significantly below its 52-week peak of $101.99.
Megha Yethatika, Uber’s Vice President of Global Community Operations, addressed employees in an internal communication, describing the team’s structure as “overly complex and siloed.” She acknowledged the company’s advancement in AI capabilities while stressing the necessity for organizational restructuring to maximize these technological investments.
“We cannot scale frontier technology on top of fragmented processes,” Yethatika wrote.
This represents Uber’s first instance of explicitly connecting employee layoffs to artificial intelligence initiatives. While the organization previously indicated hiring slowdowns due to internal AI adoption, its careers portal currently displays more than 500 available positions.
Consecutive Downsizing Within 60 Days
This restructuring follows another organizational reduction implemented less than eight weeks ago. In June, Uber downsized its human resources division by 23% ā though this constituted under 1% of its approximately 34,000-person global workforce.
The current reduction mirrors trends observed across the technology sector. Companies including Block and Oracle have similarly referenced AI-driven productivity improvements when announcing recent workforce reductions.
Uber’s announcement confirms the company is pursuing a comparable strategy.
Analysts Maintain Optimistic Outlook
Notwithstanding the stock’s recent downturn, financial analysts retain a positive perspective. With 29 Buy recommendations and two Hold ratings issued during the previous three months, UBER maintains a Strong Buy consensus among Wall Street professionals.
The consensus analyst price target stands at $107.61, suggesting potential upside of approximately 53% from present trading levels.
Uber maintains robust cash flow generation and sustained profitability. The company continues allocating resources toward autonomous vehicle collaborations and actively recruiting engineering talent to advance these initiatives.
No additional workforce reduction plans have been disclosed by the company at this juncture.
