Vista Energy, S.A.B. de C.V., VIST
According to the document filed on Friday, Thiel Macro controlled roughly 1.2 million American Depositary Shares of Vista Energy as of the second quarter’s end, representing an approximate market value of $76 million.
This position established Vista Energy as the fund’s second-most valuable disclosed investment, surpassed only by Amazon, where Thiel Macro maintained approximately 495,000 shares worth about $118 million.
During the second quarter, Thiel Macro reconstructed its publicly disclosed U.S. equity holdings to exceed $400 million. The fund had previously reported zero positions for two straight quarters.
A focus on energy was unmistakable. Among the seven new positions revealed in the regulatory filing, six were concentrated in energy or utility sector companies.
The lineup featured American Electric Power, DTE Energy, FirstEnergy, CMS Energy, X-Energy, and Vista Energy. Additionally, Thiel Macro reestablished its Vistra holdings, expanding the position to 372,755 shares with a second-quarter valuation of $59.1 million.
Vaca Muerta: A Strategic Asset
Vista Energy’s operations are centered in Argentina’s Vaca Muerta shale formation, located in NeuquĆ©n provinceāa geological treasure trove recognized as one of the world’s most significant unconventional resource plays.
The Vaca Muerta formation contains the planet’s second-largest reserves of shale gas and fourth-largest reserves of shale oil. Vista’s current production stands at approximately 160,000 barrels of oil equivalent daily, backed by more than $6.5 billion in capital investment throughout Argentina.
This positions the company as Argentina’s dominant independent energy producer and a key investment vehicle for exposure to the nation’s resource wealth.
Thiel’s Buenos Aires Relocation
The investment carries additional context beyond pure portfolio strategy. Thiel moved his family to Buenos Aires earlier in 2025 and acquired residential property in the Argentine capital.
Following his April arrival, he secured a meeting with President Javier Milei at Casa Rosada, the presidential residence, where economic policy topics were on the agenda.
Additional meetings included sessions with Economy Minister Luis Caputo, Deregulation Minister Federico Sturzenegger, and presidential adviser Santiago Caputo.
The Milei government has implemented aggressive economic reforms aimed at drawing international investment into Argentina’s commodity sectors, particularly oil, lithium, and critical mineral resources.
Thiel’s direct connections to Argentina’s leadership and his physical presence in the country suggest the Vista Energy position represents more than standard portfolio allocation.
As of Monday morning, VIST shares were trading up 5.77% on the New York Stock Exchange.
