In an unexpected announcement this week, the US Treasury revealed plans to significantly expand its bond buyback operations, focusing particularly on longer-maturity securities. This strategic decision aimed to apply downward pressure on yields across the long end of the curve.
Following the Treasury’s announcement, the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield declined to 4.65%. Simultaneously, the 30-year yield retreated to 5.19%. However, this downward momentum proved temporary, as yields began reversing course by Thursday’s early trading hours, with the 10-year rate climbing back to 4.68%.
Scott Bessent’s strategic intervention provided market stability during Wednesday’s session. Each of the three primary US equity benchmarks finished trading in positive territory that day.
Thursday morning presented a different scenario, with more fragmented market performance. Futures contracts for the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.1%. S&P 500 futures remained essentially unchanged. Nasdaq 100 futures posted a modest 0.1% gain.

Henry Allen, a macro strategist at Deutsche Bank, observed that while the buyback expansion wasn’t massive in absolute terms, the announcement “offers a signal that officials are willing to support the long end.”
Bitcoin Surpasses $70,000 Threshold
Cryptocurrency markets delivered the most dramatic response to the Treasury’s actions. Bitcoin surged over 10%, breaking through the psychologically important $70,000 level for the first time since the beginning of June.
The Treasury’s policy shift contributed to additional weakness in the US dollar. Already trading at three-month lows, the greenback extended losses by another 0.1% versus a basket of major currencies Thursday morning. Historically, dollar weakness has provided tailwinds for Bitcoin valuations.
The Treasury’s bond market intervention also creates potential complications for Federal Reserve policy. Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh had previously relied on market forces to deliver some monetary tightening. Bessent’s intervention could undermine that strategy.
Walmart Results and Mounting Debt Concerns
Walmart released quarterly results Thursday that exceeded analyst estimates. Despite the earnings beat, shares declined as investors focused on moderating growth rates in the company’s US operations.
Meanwhile, America’s total national debt crossed the $40 trillion milestone. This figure represents more than a doubling over the past ten years.
President Trump simultaneously intensified his stance toward Iran. In a Wednesday evening Truth Social post, Trump announced plans for what he termed an “ECONOMIC D-DAY” targeting the Islamic Republic. He characterized the forthcoming measures as “economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale.”
The President’s frustration stemmed from stalled negotiations regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and unresolved tensions with Iran.
Wednesday’s Treasury bond rally showed early signs of losing momentum on Thursday. Questions remain regarding whether the expanded buyback initiative will deliver sustained support to fixed income markets.
Market participants are closely monitoring yield movements as the Treasury prepares for a substantial debt issuance cycle ahead. The dollar’s ongoing weakness combined with Bitcoin’s decisive breakout represent the most unambiguous market reactions to recent developments.
