Ethereum (ETH) continues to defend the $2,500 threshold following a week marked by substantial institutional ETF participation, expanding stablecoin availability, and an extraordinary liquidation cascade affecting bearish traders.

As of Aug. 27, ETH was changing hands near $2,507, representing approximately a 7.8% gain from its $2,326 opening value recorded on Aug. 21. The digital asset momentarily touched a weekly peak around $2,566 before consolidating in a narrow band surrounding the $2,500 psychological level.
The upward movement gained traction following the US Treasury’s Aug. 19 announcement regarding plans to expand its long-duration bond repurchase operations from $2 billion to a minimum of $4 billion per execution, commencing Sept. 9. Financial markets interpreted this policy adjustment as favorable for liquidity-dependent assets such as cryptocurrencies.
Subsequently, an exceptional short squeeze unfolded across the market. Approximately $3 billion in leveraged trading positions were forcibly closed within a 24-hour window, with short positions comprising roughly 92% of the liquidations. ETH’s value surged approximately 18% throughout this episode, marking the most significant concentrated liquidation event since November 2021.
Institutional ETF Demand Builds Strong Support
US-listed spot Ethereum exchange-traded funds accumulated approximately $697.2 million in net capital inflows during the week concluding Aug. 21. This figure represents their most robust weekly performance in 2026 and contributed to a combined $2.6 billion that flowed into US-traded Bitcoin and Ethereum investment vehicles.

Across eight consecutive market sessions, ETH ETFs attracted $1.18 billion in net positive flows. This marks the longest uninterrupted positive sequence since April and the largest eight-day accumulation since October, based on SoSoValue analytics.
Stablecoin availability also demonstrated growth. The aggregate stablecoin market capitalization increased by approximately $4.1 billion throughout the preceding two weeks, including $2.37 billion during the most recent seven-day period. This represents the first sustained two-week expansion observed since the middle of May.
The amount of staked ETH continued its upward trajectory, climbing to 42.4 million Ethereum, which constitutes 34.7% of the circulating supply.
Critical Price Level at $2,550
Market analyst Ted Pillows identified $2,550 as the crucial resistance threshold. His analysis suggests that securing a daily closing price above $2,550 could catalyze a 10–15% advance and establish a trajectory toward $3,000.
Technical analysis of the daily timeframe indicates $2,656 as the subsequent price objective, with $2,812 and $2,969 serving as additional resistance zones. The 14-day Relative Strength Index currently hovers near 77, entering overbought conditions, which suggests potential consolidation before additional upward movement materializes.
A three-day liquidation density map from CoinGlass reveals the most substantial concentration of leveraged positions clustered around $2,545–$2,555, establishing this range as the immediate objective should ETH maintain its bullish trajectory.
Downside support levels are positioned at $2,432, $2,343, and $2,187 for traders monitoring potential retracement scenarios.
