A federal grand jury has returned indictments against six individuals in a sports wagering fraud investigation that includes two former NBA players. Malik Beasley and Edward Davis were named in charging documents unsealed Monday in New York’s Eastern District.
Federal authorities allege the defendants orchestrated a conspiracy to manipulate Beasley’s on-court production during NBA contests. Their objective was enabling coordinated bettors to profit from proposition wagers based on his individual statistics.
Details of the Alleged Conspiracy
Charge documents describe Davis’s role as a critical link to Beasley. Authorities claim he transmitted advance knowledge of Beasley’s intended statistical output to fellow conspirators.
The remaining defendants identified in the case are William Brown, Robert Gorodetsky, Ernesto Plascencia, and Paolo Zamorano. Records show Zamorano has maintained NBA player agent registration since 1995.
Federal prosecutors contend Beasley deliberately altered his production in targeted statistical categories including scoring and rebounding. As compensation, authorities say Davis forgave or reduced Beasley’s outstanding gambling obligations.
The charging documents indicate Beasley had accumulated substantial gambling debts. Rather than receiving direct monetary payments, bribes allegedly took the form of debt forgiveness owed to Davis.
Specific Instances Detailed in Charging Documents
Prosecutors highlighted three specific contests where the alleged stat manipulation occurred. The initial incident took place on January 26, 2024, during a matchup between the Milwaukee Bucks and Cleveland Cavaliers.
Authorities say Beasley informed Davis he would fall short of his projected rebounding numbers. His final tally was three rebounds with the betting market set at 3.5.
The following incident occurred February 27, 2024, in a game against the Charlotte Hornets. Beasley allegedly intended to score below expectations while exceeding rebound projections.
His final statistics showed six points and four rebounds. Betting markets had established lines at 12.5 points and four rebounds. Authorities report coordinated bettors collected over $77,000 in profits from that contest.
The third documented game took place March 10, 2024, versus the Los Angeles Clippers. Beasley allegedly planned to surpass his rebounding projection.
He recorded four rebounds against a 3.5 betting line. Prosecutors included text message exchanges between conspirators who monitored Beasley’s late-game rebound that secured their wagers.
Authorities state hundreds of thousands of dollars were wagered throughout the conspiracy’s operation. Three sports betting operators are listed as victims in the indictment.
Defendants face potential 20-year prison terms on wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy counts. Additional bribery charges related to sporting events carry maximum five-year sentences.
Beasley had reportedly been cleared in a separate NBA gambling probe that concluded in August 2025. That investigation resulted in former player Jontay Porter’s conviction.
At the time charges were filed, Beasley was unsigned and without a team. He had reportedly been negotiating a contract exceeding $42 million before gambling allegations surfaced publicly.
U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr. stated the defendants “corrupted professional basketball by converting it into a criminal gambling enterprise.” Multiple defendants were taken into custody Monday with arraignments scheduled for future dates.
