The J. M. Smucker Company, SJM
The company’s solid performance was primarily attributed to robust coffee segment performance and a significant one-time benefit from tariff-related refunds.
In the fiscal first quarter that concluded on July 31, Smucker delivered adjusted earnings per share of $3.24, representing a substantial increase from $1.90 in the year-ago period and handily surpassing the analyst consensus of $2.22. Revenue reached $2.22 billion, marking a 5% year-over-year increase and topping the Street’s $2.13 billion estimate.
The adjusted earnings figure incorporated an 84-cent per share contribution from tariff refunds the company secured during the three-month period. Gross profit totaled $504.9 million for the quarter, which included $115 million attributable to these tariff-related recoveries.
Coffee Segment Powers Performance
The U.S. retail coffee division generated net sales of $807.8 million, representing a 13% year-over-year increase. According to Smucker, this revenue expansion was predominantly fueled by higher net pricing across its coffee portfolio.
Cost-conscious American consumers, grappling with persistent inflation, have increasingly opted to prepare meals at home instead of frequenting restaurants. This behavioral shift has strengthened demand for household staples including coffee and spreadsātwo product categories central to Smucker’s business model.
Moderating green coffee commodity costs, which had previously spiked due to supply constraints and tariff impacts, have also enabled Smucker to recalibrate its pricing approach more favorably.
Management Upgrades Annual Forecast
The company now anticipates fiscal 2027 net sales will decline between 1% and 2%, representing a meaningful improvement from its previous projection of a 3% to 4% decrease.
Adjusted EPS guidance for the full fiscal year was elevated to a range of $10.50 to $11.00, compared with the prior outlook of $9.75 to $10.25. The Street consensus had been pegged at $10.07 per share for fiscal 2027.
This combination of stronger-than-expected quarterly results and an upgraded outlook propelled the stock higher in premarket activity Wednesday.
SJM shares closed Tuesday’s regular session down 0.3%, though the stock has advanced 5.2% month-to-date and has rallied 28% year-to-date through Tuesday’s close.
The quarterly performance underscores continued consumer appetite for Smucker’s ready-to-eat meal solutions and coffee offerings, even as the broader packaged foods industry confronts headwinds.
The company’s flagship coffee brandsāFolgers and Dunkin’āform the cornerstone of its operations, and this quarter demonstrated that pricing strength in this division remains firmly established.
The company’s revised annual sales forecast now projects only a marginal decline, a stark contrast to the more significant contraction management had previously communicated to shareholders.
Wall Street’s full-year EPS consensus of $10.07 now falls below the bottom end of Smucker’s updated guidance band of $10.50 to $11.00.
SJM stock has emerged as one of the standout performers within the packaged foods sector this year, having gained 28% year-to-date entering Wednesday’s trading session.
