Shares of SpaceX advanced roughly 2% to settle at $137.95 on Tuesday following the company’s announcement of plans to construct a $100 billion spaceport complex in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana.

The massive development, dubbed Starbase Louisiana, will occupy 125,000 acres on property previously owned by Exxon.
According to SpaceX, the complex will house five separate launch facilities, with each containing two launchpads. Additional infrastructure includes fuel manufacturing and storage operations, power generation systems, vehicle assembly areas, and deep-water shipping access. Plans also encompass residential development and a potential airport.
The timeline calls for construction to commence in 2027, with the facility’s first orbital launch scheduled for 2029.
The project was revealed through a coordinated announcement from SpaceX and Louisiana’s Economic Development agency. Governor Jeff Landry characterized the initiative as a significant economic catalyst for regional families and communities.
SpaceX indicated the development will generate 3,000 direct employment opportunities in Louisiana throughout the next decade. State officials project an additional 8,100 indirect positions will emerge from the economic activity.
In a video statement published on the company’s official website, Elon Musk projected SpaceX would deliver “probably 10,000 really exciting jobs” to the state.
Implications for Starship Development
The Louisiana facility will function as the main operational hub for Starship, SpaceX’s next-generation launch system and the most powerful rocket ever constructed. The vehicle is engineered for complete reusability.
Starship remains in development and has yet to execute a commercial payload mission. The $100 billion figure represents a long-term phased investment rather than immediate capital deployment.
SpaceX has maintained aggressive capital spending patterns. During the first six months of 2026, the company invested $28.5 billion in capital projects, with substantial allocations directed toward computing infrastructure supporting its SpaceXAI artificial intelligence division.
The company’s revenue trajectory remains robust. Second quarter 2026 revenue reached $7.8 billion, representing 92% year-over-year growth. The Starlink satellite internet service doubled its active user base to 12 million subscribers within twelve months.
Environmental Considerations Emerge
The proposed location encompasses ecologically sensitive coastal wetland areas. SpaceX has committed to preserving designated sections and coordinating with state environmental agencies on habitat conservation measures.
The company’s environmental track record includes controversies. In 2024, SpaceX was determined to have breached Clean Water Act regulations at its Texas launch operations. The company also encountered criticism regarding wildlife habitat disruption following Starship’s inaugural test flight in April 2023.
Earlier this year, Louisiana enacted legislation criminalizing unauthorized spaceport access as a felony offense while providing financial incentives for aerospace industry development. Governor Landry approved these measures, which took effect in May.
SpaceX has pledged collaboration with Louisiana officials on “historic coastal restoration” initiatives to safeguard wetland ecosystems surrounding the new installation.
The Louisiana facility represents SpaceX’s fourth launch location. The company has previously established operations in Texas, Tennessee, and Mississippi.
SpaceX maintains dominance in commercial space launches, commanding approximately 82% of the global market according to research from Motley Fool.
