Shares of Medtronic experienced a significant premarket surge exceeding 9% on Tuesday, climbing to $95.20, following the medical technology company’s announcement of fiscal first quarter results that exceeded analyst projections for the period ending July 31.
The company delivered adjusted earnings of $1.45 per share, representing an increase from $1.26 in the prior-year period and surpassing Wall Street’s consensus forecast of $1.39. Total revenue expanded 14% year-over-year to $9.76 billion, exceeding analyst projections of $9.55 billion.
Performance across all business segments exceeded forecasts. Medtronic joined industry competitors Abbott and Boston Scientific in posting quarterly results that surpassed market expectations.
The cardiovascular division, representing Medtronic’s primary business unit, delivered exceptional performance during the quarter. Revenues in this segment increased 19.5% to $3.93 billion, driven significantly by an 88% expansion in the pulsed field ablation product line, which addresses cardiac arrhythmia treatment.
Management indicated that approximately $570 million of the quarterly revenue increase was attributable to an additional week included in the reporting cycle.
The company also upgraded its fiscal 2027 financial guidance. Organic revenue growth projections now range from 7.25% to 7.75%, an improvement from the previous forecast of 6.75% to 7.25%. Full-year adjusted earnings per share guidance was refined to a range of $5.94 to $6.00, with the midpoint positioned two cents above consensus estimates.
$700M Strategic Move Into Robotic Surgery
Looking beyond the quarterly financial results, Medtronic executed a significant strategic maneuver in the robotic surgery market that could prove more consequential for long-term investors.
The medical device manufacturer revealed a $700 million capital commitment securing exclusive distribution rights for Cornerstone Robotics’ Sentire surgical platform in designated international territories excluding the United States.
Medtronic intends to market the Sentire platform in conjunction with its current Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system. The Hugo platform already competes directly against Intuitive Surgical’s market-leading Da Vinci robotic system.
Intuitive Surgical shares declined 0.2% during premarket trading on Tuesday.
According to Medtronic, combining these two robotic platforms will “expand access to robotic-assisted surgery and offer surgeons and health systems more choice and flexible solutions.”
Other Strategic Transactions and Spinoff Performance
The company also announced an $80 million equity investment in Pi-Cardia, which develops heart valve repair technologies, accompanied by an option to complete a full acquisition valued at $210 million.
MiniMed, Medtronic’s diabetes management division that was separated last year and commenced public trading in March, delivered strong quarterly performance. MiniMed’s net sales increased 17% to $843 million, surpassing analyst estimates of $826.8 million.
MiniMed shares advanced 1.4% in premarket activity.
Prior to Tuesday’s trading session, Medtronic stock had declined 5.6% year-to-date. The premarket advance positions the shares to recoup a substantial portion of those losses.
The cardiovascular segment’s quarterly revenue of $3.93 billion establishes this division as the primary growth catalyst as the company progresses through fiscal 2027.
