Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) is significantly increasing its investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure, announcing plans to expand its Hyperion data center campus in Louisiana into one of the world’s largest AI computing facilities.
The company said it will spend more than $50 billion to scale the project to 5 gigawatts (GW), more than doubling its original plans as demand for AI computing power continues to accelerate.
The revised investment marks a substantial increase from the previously announced 2GW campus, which carried an estimated cost of about $27 billion. Once completed, the Hyperion facility will rank well above the industry’s traditional 1GW benchmark for hyperscale data center campuses, underscoring Meta’s growing commitment to supporting advanced AI models and future computing workloads.
Investment Plans Grow
Meta said the Hyperion campus, located in Richland Parish, Louisiana, is expected to deliver approximately 2GW of computing capacity by 2030 before expanding further to 5GW around 2032. The phased development reflects the company’s long-term strategy of building enough infrastructure to support increasingly complex artificial intelligence systems.
The expanded investment comes as major technology companies continue racing to secure massive computing resources for generative AI applications, large language models, recommendation systems, and future AI-powered consumer products.
Meta has repeatedly identified AI as one of its highest strategic priorities, investing heavily in custom silicon, networking equipment, and data center infrastructure capable of training and operating next-generation AI models.
Louisiana Sees Economic Boost
The project is already generating substantial economic activity across Louisiana. According to Meta, businesses in the state have received more than $1.6 billion in contracts since construction began in December 2024.
Beyond the data center itself, the company also plans to invest more than $1 billion in supporting infrastructure, including improvements to roads, water systems, and wastewater facilities needed to accommodate the massive campus.
The expansion builds upon incentives approved by Louisiana officials. In late 2024, the state authorized a 20-year sales tax exemption for qualifying data centers constructed before 2029, creating a favorable environment for large-scale technology investments.
The combination of tax incentives and infrastructure spending positions the project as one of the state’s largest private-sector developments tied to the rapidly growing AI industry.
Thousands Of Jobs Expected
Construction of the expanded campus is expected to generate significant employment throughout the project’s development.
According to one contractor involved in the project, the Hyperion campus could support more than 5,000 workers during peak construction while creating over 500 permanent operational positions after completion.
Large-scale data center developments typically require extensive work across engineering, electrical systems, construction, networking, maintenance, and facility operations, creating long-term economic benefits for surrounding communities.
Meta’s additional investment in public infrastructure is also expected to improve transportation and utility capacity beyond the needs of the campus itself, potentially supporting future business development in the region.
