Key Highlights
- Novo Nordisk launches clinical study examining reduced dosages of its oral Wegovy weight-loss medication
- The 450-participant research initiative launched August 12 and continues through 2028, evaluating two unrevealed low-dose options versus placebo
- Current minimum starting dosage stands at 1.5mg, with treatment escalation available up to 25mg
- Oral Wegovy generated $500 million in second-quarter 2026 revenue, rising from $350 million the previous quarter
- Since its January 2026 U.S. debut, physicians have written over 5 million prescriptions for the medication
Novo Nordisk (NVO) has initiated a clinical investigation aimed at identifying the minimum effective dosage of its oral Wegovy weight-loss treatment that delivers meaningful results. NVO stock advanced 1.47% during trading hours.
The research program recruited 450 participants with excess weight and commenced August 12. The multi-year study extends until 2028 and evaluates two undisclosed reduced-strength doses compared with a control placebo group.
Eligibility criteria require participants to maintain a body mass index of 27 or higher, a threshold the World Health Organization classifies within the overweight range. The pharmaceutical company has declined to reveal specific dosage levels under investigation.
The research objective centers on identifying the ideal lower-strength oral semaglutide formulation for managing patients experiencing overweight conditions or obesity.
Currently, the entry-level dosage strength for oral Wegovy begins at 1.5 milligrams. Treatment protocols allow gradual dose escalation to a maximum strength of 25 milligrams based on individual patient response.
Increased Uptake Among Lower Dosage Options
Novo Nordisk has previously reported particularly robust adoption rates for its reduced-strength formulations, especially among patients purchasing medications directly without insurance reimbursement. Within the United States market, the two reduced-dose variants carry approximately half the retail price of higher-strength options for cash-paying consumers.
This significant price differential appears to influence patient decisions. Reduced dosages translate to lower expenditures, a consideration of substantial importance for individuals lacking prescription coverage.
The oral formulation entered the American market in January 2026 and has accumulated more than 5 million prescriptions. The medication has established a notable presence within the competitive obesity pharmaceutical landscape.
Revenue Performance
Second-quarter 2026 sales for the oral medication approached $500 million, representing an increase from approximately $350 million during the initial quarter. This demonstrates substantial revenue acceleration within a single quarter.
The medication currently maintains market authorization in the United States, United Kingdom, and United Arab Emirates. Novo Nordisk leadership has expressed optimism that the oral formulation will strengthen the company’s competitive position within the obesity treatment sector.
The pharmaceutical manufacturer had not provided commentary regarding the new clinical trial at press time.
Findings from this research are anticipated to clarify optimal reduced-dose parameters and may influence subsequent prescribing recommendations or product development strategies.
Study specifications appeared Tuesday within a federal clinical trials registry database.
