Legendary investor Ray Dalio, who founded Bridgewater Associates, has issued a fresh call for investors to prioritize Bitcoin and gold holdings as a hedge against America’s escalating debt emergency.
In a LinkedIn publication released Friday, Dalio outlined his concerns that mounting government obligations are approaching unsustainable territory that could trigger severe economic repercussions.
Investment Strategy: Bitcoin and Gold Take Priority
The billionaire hedge fund manager recommends investors reduce exposure to debt instruments such as bonds while increasing allocations to gold and “a bit of Bitcoin.” His portfolio framework calls for a 10% to 15% gold position to dampen volatility and preserve capital.
“My guess is that [a U.S. debt crisis] will come in three years, give or take two, if the course we’re on is not changed,” Dalio stated.
These remarks arrive as America’s national debt breached the $40 trillion milestone in recent days. Bitcoin has surged in response, climbing toward the $80,000 level after trading near $63,000 just days earlier.
Dalio’s stance on Bitcoin has evolved considerably over time. Back in 2022, he characterized a 1% to 2% Bitcoin allocation as “reasonable.” By July 2025, he disclosed owning “some, but not much” of the cryptocurrency while suggesting a combined 15% allocation split between Bitcoin and gold.
Previously, he has maintained skepticism about Bitcoin’s ability to supplant gold as a reliable store of value, while also expressing concerns regarding quantum computing threats and privacy vulnerabilities.
America’s Fiscal Crossroads
According to Dalio, the federal government has reached a critical juncture in its fiscal trajectory. He cautioned that delaying action until economic conditions deteriorate would substantially complicate resolution efforts.
“When the economy is in a contraction, the government’s borrowing needs increase a lot,” he explained.
Bitcoin’s recent price momentum received additional support from a U.S. Treasury Department disclosure revealing intentions to substantially expand its debt buyback initiative. This announcement followed the 30-year Treasury yield reaching its highest point since 2007.
Escalating tensions between the United States and Iran are compounding economic challenges, driving energy costs upward and intensifying inflationary pressures. Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh has committed to maintaining price stability despite growing calls for tighter monetary policy.
Prediction markets, including Polymarket, now indicate more than 50% odds of a Federal Reserve interest rate increase as policymakers navigate the delicate balance between controlling inflation and supporting economic expansion.
Dalio emphasized that political transitions and international conflicts, including military engagements, possess the potential to either accelerate or postpone a debt crisis timeline.
With a personal fortune exceeding $15 billion, Dalio’s investment perspectives carry substantial weight throughout global financial markets.
