Zcash (ZEC) surged beyond the $800 threshold on Saturday, marking its first breach of this level since the beginning of 2018. The cryptocurrency reached a peak of $851 during a volatile 24-hour period that also witnessed lows around $589.

This dramatic upswing followed Friday’s impressive 17.49% advance, which brought ZEC to $668.60. That single-day performance represented one of the strongest rallies across the cryptocurrency sector during that trading session.
The explosive price action propelled Zcash beyond its early 2018 ceiling of approximately $800, a resistance point that had remained unbroken for eight consecutive years. The breakout also exceeded the $750 threshold achieved in November of last year.
Market participants on social platforms have begun drawing parallels between Zcash and Bitcoin. Similar to Bitcoin, Zcash features a maximum supply of 21 million coins, operates on a proof-of-work mining consensus mechanism, and implements a periodic halving model. The distinguishing factor lies in Zcash’s additional privacy layer enabled through shielded transaction technology.
Digital Currency Group maintains ties to multiple recent catalysts driving the token’s momentum. Grayscale, a DCG subsidiary, submitted its fourth amended registration document to the Securities and Exchange Commission on August 18, advancing its initiative to transform the Zcash Trust into a spot-based ETF listed on NYSE Arca with the ZCSH ticker symbol.
Grayscale’s ETF Application and the 200,000 ZEC Discussion
The regulatory filing outlines a transition strategy from the OTCQX marketplace to NYSE Arca. The proposed structure would enable ongoing share creation and establish a redemption mechanism designed to minimize price discrepancies between shares and the underlying ZEC asset value.
Documentation revealed that DCG International Investments has initiated preliminary discussions regarding a potential contribution of roughly 200,000 ZEC tokens to the trust in exchange for equivalent shares. Given that the trust controlled approximately 388,674 ZEC as of late June, this proposed addition represents a significant expansion.
These negotiations remain preliminary and non-committal. DCG retains flexibility to adjust the contribution amount upward, downward, or withdraw entirely. The ETF proposal awaits regulatory approval and continues undergoing SEC evaluation.
Derivatives Trading Reaches Multi-Billion Dollar Levels
Zcash futures trading activity surged to approximately $4.55 billion on Friday, significantly outpacing spot market volume of about $553 million. Outstanding futures contracts totaled nearly $1.35 billion.
During the subsequent 24-hour window through Saturday, trading volume reached $2.24 billion, representing roughly 16% of Zcash’s complete market capitalization.
Market analyst Rager shared on X that ZEC had achieved a fresh all-time high, commenting: “They really trying to send this to $1000 in less than a week.” The observation captured the intensifying speculative momentum surrounding the asset.
Zcash currently occupies the 12th position in cryptocurrency market capitalization rankings at $13.87 billion, maintaining supremacy over all competing privacy-oriented digital assets.
