MoneyToday broke the story, referencing industry insiders who confirmed that Samsung intends to convene a board meeting prior to August’s end to give formal approval to the package.
Should the information prove accurate, this would represent one of the most substantial shareholder return initiatives in South Korean corporate history.
Financing for the initiative will derive from half of the corporation’s free cash flow generation. Last month, Samsung disclosed that its board had begun deliberating this year’s distribution strategy, with special dividend payments under consideration.
The emphasis will likely fall on cash dividend distributions rather than stock repurchases. According to the report, buyback programs could trigger regulatory challenges connected to Samsung Life Insurance and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, both entities with ownership connections to the parent organization.
While certain market analysts had speculated Samsung might distribute up to 200 trillion won to shareholders, MoneyToday indicated that such projections were deemed impractical considering the corporation’s continuing capital expenditure requirements.
SK Hynix Establishes Benchmark
Samsung’s announcement emerges merely 24 hours after domestic competitor SK Hynix disclosed a 40 trillion won ($29 billion) share buyback and cancellation strategy. SK Hynix committed to dedicating over half of its free cash flow from 2025 through 2027 toward investor returns.
That initiative already stood as the most significant shareholder return program from any South Korean publicly traded corporation. Samsung’s reported strategy would eclipse it.
SK Hynix ranks as the globe’s second-largest memory semiconductor manufacturer. Samsung maintains the leading position.
Program Components
According to MoneyToday’s coverage, special cash dividend payments will form a central element of Samsung’s strategy. The board meeting is anticipated to occur during August’s final days.
Samsung had previously indicated its intention to maintain equilibrium between investor payouts and investments in future expansion. The corporation is managing an AI-fueled semiconductor demand surge that has elevated profitability throughout the memory chip industry.
The 50% free cash flow commitment reflects the framework SK Hynix employed for its program, which was announced the preceding day.
Samsung’s 005930 stock registered a 9.49% gain on the Seoul stock exchange in response to the disclosure.
