At the Eurosatory 2026 defense exhibition in Paris this Monday, AeroVironment (AVAV) introduced the TOM 50 RE. This compact uncrewed ground vehicle comes from Telerob, a ground robotics subsidiary fully owned by AeroVironment.
Monday’s opening price for AVAV stock settled at $170.58, marking a substantial decline from its 52-week peak of $417.86. The 200-day moving average currently stands at $234.65, while the 50-day average registers at $184.20.
Weighing under 10 kilograms—approximately 22 pounds—the TOM 50 RE easily packs into a conventional backpack. A single operator manages deployment and can load up to five kilograms of additional equipment.
The tracked design enables stair climbing, navigation across rough terrain, and indoor operations. Engineers designed it specifically for confined environments where human presence poses significant danger.
Four primary mission categories define the platform’s capabilities: reconnaissance with environmental mapping, explosive ordnance disposal operations, communications relay functions, and support operations for larger robotic platforms.
Advanced SLAM Technology Provides Tactical Edge
The integrated SLAM technology—simultaneous localization and mapping—represents a critical differentiator. This feature enables real-time digital mapping of multi-level structures and subterranean spaces independent of GPS connectivity.
This capability proves invaluable in urban warfare scenarios where GPS signals face interference or deliberate jamming. The system records significant points throughout operations for subsequent tactical analysis.
Four wide-angle cameras equipped with infrared technology deliver complete 360-degree visibility in daylight and darkness. Additionally, the unit functions as a mobile communications relay, maintaining connectivity for personnel in signal-compromised locations.
Operators control the system through AeroVironment’s AV_Halo software platform on Tomahawk Grip devices, or alternatively through Telerob’s proprietary Robo Command Control System. The modular payload architecture allows mission-specific equipment configurations.
