The mission, postponed because of unfavorable weather conditions, is now scheduled to take place after the U.S. market closes on Friday, leaving investors to digest the outcome over the weekend before markets reopen on Monday.
The timing creates an unusual setup for traders. Since the launch occurs after regular trading hours, the first full opportunity for institutional and retail investors to react with normal market liquidity will arrive on Monday, increasing the possibility of a significant price swing in either direction.
SpaceX shares ended Thursday’s session at $118.24, gaining 2.6% despite the Nasdaq Composite falling more than 2%. Even so, the stock remains below its $135 IPO price, underscoring the uncertainty that has surrounded the company’s first weeks as a publicly traded firm.

Heavy Short Interest Builds
One of the biggest factors adding to the anticipation is the extraordinary level of bearish positioning against SpaceX stock.
Recent market data showed that approximately 360 million shares, representing around 56% of the company’s free float, were on loan earlier this week. While securities lending does not automatically mean every borrowed share has been sold short, it indicates that a substantial portion of market participants are positioned for further downside.
The scale of those positions means relatively small changes in the share price could translate into enormous gains or losses for traders. Based on the number of borrowed shares, every $1 movement in SpaceX stock represents roughly $360 million in value tied to those outstanding positions.
If the stock were to recover to its IPO price of $135, the implied cost for bearish traders covering comparable positions could run into several billions of dollars, highlighting the potential for elevated volatility should positive launch results trigger aggressive buying.
Market analytics firm Ortex noted that bearish traders have not shown signs of reducing their exposure. Instead, they appear to be maintaining, or even increasing, their positions despite the approaching catalyst.
Mission Carries Strategic Importance
Unlike a routine launch, Flight 13 represents another critical milestone in SpaceX’s effort to validate Starship as the backbone of its next-generation satellite deployment strategy.
The mission will test multiple systems simultaneously. After liftoff, the Super Heavy booster must separate successfully before executing a controlled return and landing burn over the ocean. Meanwhile, the Starship vehicle is expected to deploy 20 Starlink V3 satellites before completing its own splashdown approximately 65 minutes after launch.
Although the satellites are expected to burn up during atmospheric reentry, their operational lifespan is not the primary objective. Instead, engineers are focused on demonstrating deployment capability and validating new networking hardware.
The satellites will attempt laser communications with the Starlink network, while several units equipped with onboard cameras will monitor the spacecraft’s heat shield during flight. These tests could provide valuable engineering data that influences future Starship missions.
More importantly for investors, successful Starship deployment could dramatically expand Starlink’s network capacity. Company projections suggest that each operational Starship mission could add roughly 60 terabits per second of network capacity, more than 20 times what a Falcon 9 Starlink mission currently delivers.
Learning From Flight 12
The upcoming mission also serves as a follow-up to Flight 12, which produced mixed results.
During that mission, Starship successfully deployed its payload and survived atmospheric reentry. However, the Super Heavy booster encountered problems during its return sequence after several engines failed to restart, resulting in a hard landing.
Following an investigation, aviation regulators completed their review after SpaceX implemented corrective measures designed to address the booster’s engine restart issues.
As a result, Flight 13 will be closely examined for evidence that those engineering improvements have resolved the previous mission’s shortcomings. Investors are expected to pay particular attention to booster performance, successful satellite deployment, and the spacecraft’s overall survivability throughout the mission.
Monday Could Set The Tone
Beyond Friday’s launch, investors also have additional catalysts approaching.
SpaceX is scheduled to report its first quarterly earnings as a public company on August 4, providing Wall Street with its first detailed financial snapshot since the IPO. Shortly afterward, another significant event will arrive when more than 911 million lock-up shares become eligible for trading on August 6, potentially increasing market supply.
For now, however, virtually all attention remains fixed on Starship Flight 13.
A successful mission could strengthen confidence in SpaceX’s long-term Starlink expansion strategy while forcing bearish traders to reassess their positions. Conversely, another delay, technical issue, or only partial mission success could reinforce existing concerns and extend recent selling pressure.
