Strategy (MSTR) shares experienced a substantial decline of approximately 4% during Monday’s trading session, opening morning activity at $137.30 before ultimately settling at $137.35, representing a $5.46 decrease or 3.82% decline for the day.
During intraday trading, the shares reached a session low of $135.38, representing a significant retreat from the stock’s 52-week peak of $365.21.
The primary catalyst behind the decline was Bitcoin’s weakness. The leading cryptocurrency slid below the psychologically important $80,000 threshold on Monday, finishing around $79,116, marking a decline of more than 1.5%. Given that MSTR functions essentially as a leveraged proxy for Bitcoin exposure, downward movements in BTC consistently translate to amplified selling pressure on the equity.
Broader macroeconomic conditions compounded the negative sentiment. The employment situation report released Friday revealed 162,000 new positions created during August, substantially surpassing the consensus estimate of 55,000. Such a significant upside surprise intensifies speculation regarding additional Federal Reserve rate increases, which typically pressures risk-sensitive assets like cryptocurrencies and related equities.
Equity markets broadly reflected this cautious sentiment. The S&P 500 index retreated 0.4%, the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite declined 0.4%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.8%.
Company Doubles Buyback Authorization, Though Common Shareholders Excluded
Strategy disclosed that its board of directors authorized an expansion of the Digital Credit Securities Repurchase Program, doubling the authorization from $1 billion to $2 billion. While this initially appears positive, the details reveal important limitations.
The repurchase authorization exclusively covers STRC preferred stock. During the latest reporting period, zero MSTR common shares were repurchased, meaning regular equity holders received no tangible advantage from the program.
Strategy has repurchased $176M of $STRC and increased the size of its Digital Credit Securities Repurchase Program from $1.0B to $2.0B. As of 9/7/26, we hold 845,050 $BTC and $6.5B of USD Assets. $MSTR https://t.co/mxqv9QCRat

CEO Michael Saylor shared analysis regarding Bitcoin Credit performance metrics, highlighting that STRC’s Bitcoin Credit spread contracted by 1 basis point to 53 basis points. He characterized this movement as evidence of enhanced stability within the company’s Bitcoin-collateralized securities structure. Market participants, however, showed little reaction.
Technical Indicators Signal Potential Headwinds
Examining technical chart patterns, MSTR continues trading above both its 20-day moving average ($115.53) and 50-day moving average ($103.51), signals that would typically suggest constructive momentum.
However, the critical challenge emerges from the 200-day moving average positioned at $139.09. The stock currently trades marginally beneath this technical level, which functions as significant resistance and constrains upward price movement attempts.
Technical oscillators display overbought conditions, suggesting elevated risk for additional near-term price softness. Analyst projections for the upcoming five trading sessions establish a range between $132.00 and $143.50, with consensus expectations favoring either lateral consolidation or downward drift.
A constructive development emerged from Canaccord Genuity, which increased its MSTR price target to $179 from the prior $175 level while reaffirming a Buy rating. This incremental upgrade, however, proved insufficient to counteract the prevailing selling momentum during the session.
Strategy’s Bitcoin holdings and reserve position remain stable without changes, while the 200-day moving average at $139.09 persists as the critical technical threshold for market participants to monitor.
