Alberta’s entrance into the regulated online gambling sector is just days away, and provincial authorities have already established integrity safeguards before the first authorized wager goes live.
The International Betting Integrity Association has received official approval as the province’s integrity watchdog. This designation provides the entity with direct oversight responsibilities for monitoring questionable betting behavior from the market’s opening.
The marketplace will commence operations on July 13. This represents one of Canada’s most significant regulated online gambling expansions since Ontario launched its framework in 2022.
Leading Brands Prepared for Market Entry
Approximately 30 sportsbook and casino platforms are poised to launch in Alberta’s marketplace simultaneously. This roster features prominent names such as FanDuel, DraftKings, BetRivers, Betway, and theScore.
The provincially-operated Play Alberta service will also participate in the competitive landscape. With such a large group of operators entering together, the battle for market share is anticipated to be fierce immediately.
IBIA has announced it will collaborate with the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission. This partnership will identify abnormal wagering trends and elevate issues connected to potential manipulation or fraudulent betting schemes.
The entity’s Monitoring and Alert Platform, referred to as MAP, will serve as Alberta’s primary surveillance tool. MAP analyzes wagering behavior across various sports and platforms to detect irregularities that might indicate problematic activity.
When the system generates alerts, information can be distributed to regulatory bodies, betting operators, sports organizations, and law enforcement when necessary.
IBIA characterized Alberta’s strategy as an exemplary framework for emerging regulated markets. The province has incorporated mandatory compliance requirements and established formal information exchange protocols between regulators and integrity organizations.
This structure reflects what IBIA has been advocating worldwide. As additional jurisdictions establish legal betting frameworks, the association maintains that integrity mechanisms must be operational from inception rather than implemented retroactively.
North American Expansion of Integrity Systems
This development also expands IBIA’s operational scope across North America. The association currently functions in Ontario, and Alberta’s marketplace extends its regional influence.
Based on IBIA’s 2026 integrity statistics, North America represented 20% of all questionable betting alerts the organization documented. Europe alone exceeded this figure with 28%.
Tennis and mixed martial arts produced the highest alert volumes throughout the continent. Lower-level tennis competitions and combat sporting events have attracted attention from integrity specialists for multiple years.
Worldwide, IBIA documented 70 questionable betting alerts throughout the first quarter of 2026. These alerts covered 10 distinct sporting categories.
Soccer topped the list with 25 alerts. Tennis recorded 16, while esports registered 15.
IBIA has not revealed what portion of these alerts originated from Canadian betting operations.
Alberta’s market opening will receive considerable attention as a benchmark for how emerging markets can establish compliance frameworks before operators accept wagers. The province’s approach of activating integrity monitoring from launch day establishes clear standards for the operators joining the market on July 13.
