TLDR
- Amazon revealed an enhanced version of its AI-driven warehouse robot Proteus that accepts voice instructions and moves independently throughout facilities
- The updated Proteus system is scheduled for deployment across European distribution centers during the first half of 2027
- Amazon plans to allocate €10 billion ($11.6 billion) toward expanding its European logistics infrastructure
- STARK tote-management technology will reach 15 European locations by 2027; Vulcan represents Amazon’s inaugural touch-sensitive robotic system
- AMZN shares increased 0.85% during trading; 46 Wall Street analysts assign it a Strong Buy rating with a consensus price target of $319.14
Amazon presented its next-generation Proteus warehouse robotics platform during its “Delivering the Future” showcase held in Dartford, England this Thursday. AMZN shares climbed 0.85% during the session.
The enhanced robotics system marks a significant advancement from the existing model, which operates exclusively in loading dock zones across 25 facilities in the United States, transporting carts weighing up to 400 kilograms. The next-generation variant can navigate autonomously throughout complete warehouse spaces.
The transformative feature centers on human-robot communication. Rather than requiring detailed programming for individual tasks, staff members can now verbally communicate objectives to the robot, which independently executes the work.
“You tell it what needs to be done. It figures out the priority, the route, the timing,” said Scott Dresser, VP of Amazon Robotics.
This development forms a component of Amazon’s expansive €10 billion investment targeting its European fulfillment operations, representing one of the company’s most substantial infrastructure pledges across the region.
New Robots on the Floor
Beyond Proteus, Amazon unveiled two additional automation systems. STARK serves as a tote-management robot initially tested in Barcelona, with plans to expand to 15 European facilities before 2027 ends. Vulcan marks Amazon’s first robotic platform equipped with tactile sensing capabilities, engineered for handling items requiring delicate manipulation.
The upgraded Proteus platform is expected to begin operations in Europe during early 2027.
Amazon also disclosed intentions to establish over 25 sub-same-day fulfillment centers throughout Europe this year, focusing on Britain and Germany. Amazon Now, the company’s rapid essentials delivery service, will extend coverage to Manchester and Birmingham.
Same-day fresh grocery fulfillment currently operates in over 2,300 American cities and select Tokyo areas, with additional expansion planned for Japan, Britain, and additional territories.
Alexa+ and Capital Spending
Alexa+, Amazon’s advanced AI-powered virtual assistant, will become available in 10 more countries throughout 2027.
Regarding financial commitments, Amazon forecasted earlier this year that capital expenditures would surge over 50% to reach $200 billion in 2025. This allocation encompasses AI infrastructure, warehouse automation technologies, and delivery network enhancement.
The Dartford presentation demonstrated how these financial resources are being implemented operationally.
Forty-six Wall Street analysts presently assign AMZN a Strong Buy rating, derived from 45 Buy recommendations and three Hold ratings issued within the past three months.
The consensus 12-month price target stands at $319.14, suggesting approximately 26% potential upside from present trading levels.
