Shares of Amylyx Pharmaceuticals experienced a dramatic rally on Tuesday, climbing more than 45% following the announcement of positive late-stage clinical trial results for avexitide, its investigational treatment for post-bariatric hypoglycemia. The stock reached $31.72 during morning sessions.

The Phase 3 study enrolled 78 participants who had previously received Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedures. Results showed avexitide achieved a 55% reduction in low blood sugar events versus placebo during the 16-week treatment period, successfully achieving the study’s primary endpoint.
Post-bariatric hypoglycemia represents a significant unmet medical need with no currently available FDA-approved therapies. The condition can result in serious complications including impaired cognitive function, unconsciousness, and seizure activity.
James Condulis, an analyst at Stifel, characterized the efficacy data as exceeding market expectations, describing it as a “best-case scenario” outcome for the trial.
“Patients want more than anything to reduce the number of hypoglycemia events so that they can live independently without the fear,” said Dr. Marilyn Tan, the study’s lead investigator.
The mechanism of action for avexitide involves inhibiting specific GLP-1 receptors within pancreatic tissue, thereby controlling excessive insulin release and maintaining stable glucose concentrations. The safety profile was favorable, with primarily mild to moderate adverse events such as gastrointestinal discomfort and bruising reported.
Pharmaceutical Resurgence Following Previous Challenges
This clinical achievement represents a significant turnaround for Amylyx following considerable challenges. The biotechnology firm withdrew its ALS therapy Relyvrio from commercial availability in 2024 following disappointing confirmatory trial outcomes, resulting in workforce reductions and organizational restructuring.
Armed with approximately $250 million in available capital, Amylyx indicated plans to submit a regulatory filing to U.S. authorities by the end of this year, with commercial availability anticipated in 2027.
Analysts at TD Cowen forecast avexitide could achieve peak annual U.S. revenues of $2.2 billion. Geoffrey Meacham from Citi noted that investor focus will now center on “filing acceptance, label breadth, and launch execution in an underrecognized market.”
The company obtained rights to avexitide through a $35.1 million acquisition from Eiger BioPharmaceuticals during bankruptcy proceedings in 2024. Currently, patients with this condition rely on dietary modifications, continuous glucose monitoring, and medications that block carbohydrate absorption.
Company Launches $350 Million Equity Financing
On the same day as the trial announcement, Amylyx revealed plans for a $350 million underwritten public stock offering. Underwriters received an option to acquire an additional $52.5 million in shares over a 30-day period.
Capital raised will be allocated toward pre-launch activities for avexitide, encompassing expanded manufacturing capabilities, continued research initiatives, and general corporate operations.
The offering is being managed by Leerink Partners, Morgan Stanley, Guggenheim Securities, and LifeSci Capital as joint bookrunning managers.
Completion of the financing remains contingent on market dynamics, and the company noted that there can be no guarantee regarding final timing or execution.
The company’s current pipeline includes four experimental therapies targeting endocrine disorders and neurodegenerative conditions.
