Escalating Cryptocurrency Violence Across France
According to Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, France documented 77 violent incidents connected to cryptocurrency during 2026. This represents a significant increase from the 45 cases registered in 2025. Approximately 200 individuals have faced arrest in relation to these criminal acts.
Research conducted by Chainalysis identified 30 publicly documented violent cryptocurrency incidents in France during just the first six months of 2026, exceeding the 19 cases recorded throughout the entire 2025 calendar year.
On a worldwide scale, criminal elements obtained over $30 million through physical violence-based attacks during the initial half of 2026. Chainalysis calculated a 26% success rate for these attacks, representing a decline from the 49% success rate observed in 2025.
Residential invasions accounted for 37% of recorded attacks through the middle of 2026, substantially higher than the 14% proportion in 2025. Within France specifically, more than 40% of incidents targeted a family member or business associate of the cryptocurrency owner rather than the owner themselves.
Chainalysis attributed this targeting methodology to compromised tax documentation and social media information, including a 2024 alleged acquisition of French tax records and a January security breach at cryptocurrency tax service Waltio that impacted approximately 50,000 user accounts.
