BJ’s Wholesale Club Holdings, Inc., BJ
The warehouse club operator delivered adjusted earnings per share of $1.36, handily beating the analyst consensus of $1.17. Revenue climbed 16% to reach $6.23 billion, topping the $5.97 billion Wall Street projection.
Comparable store sales registered an 11.9% year-over-year increase, bolstered significantly by robust fuel sales. When gasoline revenue is stripped out, comparable sales still grew 3.1%, surpassing the 2.6% analyst forecast.
Revenue from membership fees expanded 9.9% to $135.6 million. Management attributed this growth to improved member acquisition rates, higher retention levels, and increased penetration of premium membership tiers at both newly opened and established warehouse locations.
The company’s membership base reached an all-time high of 8.5 million members during the quarter. Numbers like these demonstrate genuine customer engagement.
Profitability Metrics Show Broad Strength
Operating income advanced 16.5% to $252.4 million. Net income grew 15.4% to $173.9 million, compared to $150.7 million in the same period last year. Reported earnings per share stood at $1.36, an increase from $1.14 in the year-ago quarter.
Chief Executive Officer Bob Eddy noted that the company’s competitive pricing strategy continues to strike a chord with its customer base. “The positive trends we’re experiencing across our key strategic initiatives provide us with substantial confidence as we look forward,” he stated.
Chief Financial Officer Laura Felice commented: “We achieved robust profitability, expanded membership fee revenue, and exceeded expectations in gasoline sales ā all factors that allowed us to increase our full year adjusted EPS guidance.”
Full-Year Outlook Receives Upgrade
BJ’s increased its full-year adjusted earnings per share guidance to a range of $4.60-$4.80, an upgrade from the previous $4.40-$4.60 forecast. The new midpoint of $4.70 exceeds the current Wall Street consensus estimate of $4.53.
Management maintained its comparable-club sales guidance, excluding fuel, at 2% to 3% annual growth. The Street had been modeling 2.5% growth for this metric.
Throughout the quarter, BJ’s expanded its footprint by opening three new warehouse clubs and adding one fuel station. The company also executed share buybacks, repurchasing 1.4 million shares for $124.1 million.
