Multiple gunshots disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in the nation’s capital on Saturday evening, prompting the immediate evacuation of President Donald Trump by his security detail.
The incident unfolded at approximately 8:35pm Eastern Time at the Washington Hilton hotel. The gunman discharged his weapon near a security screening area in the hotel’s entrance lobby, away from the main ballroom hosting the prestigious event.
President Trump had been seated alongside First Lady Melania Trump at the head table when Secret Service personnel swiftly entered the venue. Within 120 seconds, the entire presidential table was cleared.
Vice President JD Vance attended the function and was similarly evacuated without incident. Other high-ranking officials including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were rapidly escorted from the premises through alternate exits.
A Secret Service agent sustained a gunshot wound at point-blank range. His protective body armor prevented serious injury, and medical officials anticipate a complete recovery.
Suspect Identified
Authorities have identified the gunman as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, a resident of Torrance, California. Secret Service agents overpowered and detained him at the location. According to CBS News reports, Allen admitted to investigators that his intention was to target officials from the Trump administration.
President Trump disclosed that Allen carried several firearms. Federal Bureau of Investigation personnel and local law enforcement are currently executing a search warrant at a residence in Torrance, California. Formal charges are anticipated to be filed in court Monday morning.
CNN journalist Wolf Blitzer had departed the ballroom and was positioned near the lobby entrance during the shooting. A law enforcement officer forced him to the floor for safety and relocated him to a protected area. Blitzer reported witnessing multiple officers subduing the armed individual.
Approximately 2,600 attendees were present at the annual gathering. Many sought cover beneath tables as gunfire echoed through the venue. National Guard units and additional law enforcement personnel surrounded the hotel perimeter while helicopters monitored the situation from above.
Trump Addresses Press After Evacuation
President Trump conducted an unscheduled media briefing from the James Brady Press Room at the White House around 10:30pm. Still wearing his formal tuxedo, he appeared alongside FBI Director Kash Patel and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin.
The President indicated he initially mistook the gunfire for kitchen equipment before recognizing the actual threat. He commended the Secret Service for their rapid and professional response.
Via his Truth Social platform, Trump revealed he had suggested continuing the dinner but deferred to law enforcement recommendations. Event organizers made the decision to cancel the remainder of the evening.
Trump announced plans to hold the rescheduled dinner within the next 30 days. White House Correspondents’ Association president Weijia Jiang verified all attendees were unharmed and confirmed plans to reorganize the event.
The Washington Hilton holds historical significance as the location where President Ronald Reagan survived an assassination attempt in 1981.
