Shares of Home Depot (HD) advanced about 1.5% to $340.80 in pre-market activity on Tuesday following the release of second-quarter fiscal results that exceeded Wall Street’s projections.
The retailer reported adjusted earnings of $4.92 per share, outpacing the consensus forecast of $4.73. Total revenue climbed to $47.86 billion, surpassing expectations of $47.23 billion, representing a 5.6% increase from the prior-year period.
Chief Financial Officer Richard McPhail highlighted widespread customer engagement throughout the quarter. “We saw broad based demand across the business as customers continued to engage in smaller projects,” he said.
Analysts had entered the earnings season with muted expectations. The ongoing housing affordability challenges have reduced home-buying activity nationwide, which traditionally serves as a catalyst for significant home-improvement expenditures.
According to analytics from Placer.ai, both store traffic per location and total customer visits declined during the second quarter. This data had positioned investors for potentially disappointing results.
The shares remain underwater, declining 1.8% year-to-date as of Monday’s close and dropping approximately 17% over the trailing twelve months. Consequently, investor expectations were relatively subdued.
An additional concern emerged prior to the announcement. CEO Ted Decker’s medical leave, disclosed the previous week, had introduced uncertainty among some market participants ahead of the earnings release.
Strong Performance Sparks Positive Sentiment
The company exceeded expectations across both revenue and earnings metrics. Over the past three months, twelve analysts upgraded their EPS forecasts while sixteen reduced their estimates, indicating a cautious stance among market watchers before the report.
Home Depot’s overall financial health receives a “fair performance” rating from InvestingPro, acknowledging the headwinds the retailer has navigated amid a challenging housing market.
Despite these obstacles, slightly more than half of analysts monitored by FactSet maintain bullish recommendations on the stock. The consensus price target stands at $378, representing approximately 13% upside from pre-earnings trading levels.
The stock’s valuation had compressed during its recent period of weakness, which several analysts interpreted as a recalibration that improved the investment opportunity.
Full-Year Outlook Unchanged
Management reiterated its fiscal 2026 financial targets. The company continues to project sales growth ranging from 2.5% to 4.5% alongside adjusted earnings per share of $14.69, implying flat to approximately 4% earnings expansion.
This guidance was originally introduced alongside the first-quarter earnings announcement, which similarly delivered above-consensus performance.
During the three-month period preceding this quarterly release, Home Depot received 12 upward and 16 downward analyst estimate revisions for earnings per share, underscoring the divided sentiment surrounding the home-improvement sector.
The stock finished Monday’s regular session at $337.88 before rising in Tuesday’s pre-market hours.
