Shares of Jumia Technologies (JMIA) advanced 7.66% to $6.255 on Wednesday following the release of second-quarter 2026 financial results that exceeded earnings expectations and the announcement of a strategic $50M capital infusion.
The company posted GAAP earnings per share of -$0.05, beating analyst projections by $0.05. However, quarterly revenue of $52M fell short of the Street’s $53.29M estimate by a narrow margin.
On an adjusted EBITDA basis, losses contracted significantlyādown 36% year-over-year to $8.7M from $13.6M in the comparable quarter of 2025. The operating loss also improved, declining 25% annually to $12.4M.
Gross profit demonstrated robust expansion, climbing 28% year-over-year to $30.7M, significantly outpacing the company’s 14% revenue growth rate. The gross profit margin widened by 92 basis points to reach 14.2% as a percentage of GMV.
Total GMV (Gross Merchandise Value) hit $216.3M, representing a 23% increase year-over-year, or 17% growth when adjusted for currency fluctuations. Physical goods orders expanded 28% annually to 6.3M transactions.
The platform’s quarterly active customer base grew 23% year-over-year to 2.6M users. Nigeria delivered particularly strong performance with 36% growth in physical goods GMV, while Ghana posted impressive 77% expansion.
Prioritizing Profitability Over Volume
CEO Francis Dufay emphasized the company’s strategic discipline. “We deliberately chose to protect our margins and unit economics this quarter rather than chase GMV at the expense of profitability,” he stated.
The Home and Living category captured increased market share as Phones and Electronics faced headwinds from supply chain disruptions. While average order value decreased 5% to $34.6, gross profit per order improved 2% to $4.9ādemonstrating enhanced efficiency.
Marketplace revenue experienced strong momentum, advancing 34% year-over-year to $28.8M. Marketing and advertising revenue delivered exceptional growth, soaring 88% to $3.5M, representing one of the quarter’s most notable achievements.
Customer retention metrics improved, with the 90-day repurchase rate reaching 44% in Q1 2026, up from 42% in the year-ago period. Adoption of pickup stations continued climbing, now representing 75% of shipped packages compared to 71% previously.
World Bank Group Anchors Funding Round
Jumia completed a $50M capital raise headlined by a $25M investment from the International Finance Corporation. Under the agreement, investors will acquire 9.1M American Depositary Shares priced at $5.52 per ADS.
Axian, already one of Jumia’s major shareholders, joined the round alongside additional new institutional investors. Leadership characterized the IFC’s participation as a significant validation that enhances credibility with the broader investment community.
The fresh capital will be deployed to fuel expansion across Jumia’s key African markets and enhance the company’s marketplace infrastructure and logistics capabilities. Management emphasized that the financing mitigates capital risk as the company advances toward sustained profitability.
The company revised its GMV growth outlook to 15-25% year-over-year for the third quarter of 2026 and 20-30% for the full fiscal year. The adjustment reflects ongoing supply constraints affecting the phones and electronics categories.
Full-year 2026 adjusted EBITDA guidance held steady at negative $25M to $30M. Both the Q4 2026 breakeven objective and the fiscal 2027 annual profitability target remain intact.
Quarterly cash burn increased to $14.3M from $12.4M in Q2 2025. The company reported a liquidity position of $48.3M at the end of the quarter.
The capital raise transaction is anticipated to finalize during the second half of August 2026, subject to standard closing conditions.
