On July 15, Ostiumāa decentralized derivatives exchange operating on Arbitrumāshut down all trading operations following a security breach that resulted in approximately $18 million USDC being siphoned from its main liquidity pool.
Two prominent blockchain security analysts, Blockaid and CertiK, independently detected and reported the security incident. Blockaid calculated the damage at roughly $18 million, whereas CertiK’s assessment suggested losses could reach $22 million. Ostium’s team has yet to release official loss figures as their investigation continues.
The vulnerability exploited centered on Ostium’s oracle infrastructureāthe critical mechanism responsible for delivering external market price information to the trading platform.
Blockaid’s analysis revealed that the perpetrator gained access to a legitimate component within Ostium’s automated pricing architecture known as a PriceUpKeep forwarder. This module handles the delivery of current asset valuations to the blockchain during trade execution.
The malicious actor introduced oracle price data containing falsified, forward-dated timestamps. These manipulated entries made unprofitable positions appear successful, deceiving the vault into authorizing approximately $18 million worth of USDC payouts.
In an official statement on X, Ostium announced the suspension of trading operations after discovering irregularities with its vault system. The team stated: “With user security being our first concern, we recommend that all users temporarily revoke approvals for our contracts until we can further investigate the recent incident.”
Breaking Down the Oracle Manipulation
The platform relies on Gelato, an external automation service, to transmit real-world asset pricing information to the blockchain. The PriceUpKeep smart contract functions as the central mechanism in this update process, initiating price refreshes.
By compromising an authorized position within this framework, the attacker successfully inserted fabricated pricing information with incorrect timing parameters, tricking the protocol into recognizing phantom profitable transactions and authorizing fund releases from the vault.
Ostium facilitates leveraged trading across commodities, foreign exchange, stock indices, and digital assets with leverage options extending to 200x, with all settlements conducted in USDC.
Rising Trend of Oracle-Based Vulnerabilities
This breach follows closely behind a similar attack on Summer.fi just seven days prior, where hackers extracted $6 million using nearly identical exploitation techniques. Cybersecurity experts note a concerning shift toward targeting offchain components like oracle networks instead of exploiting vulnerabilities directly within smart contract programming.
According to DeFiLlama statistics, cryptocurrency-related security breaches resulted in nearly $630 million in stolen funds during April alone, marking the highest single-month total since February 2025. Decentralized finance protocols bore the majority of these losses.
Prior to this incident, Ostium had secured $27.8 million across multiple funding rounds, including a substantial $24 million Series A investment co-led by General Catalyst and Jump Crypto in late 2025. Before the attack, the platform had facilitated over $50 billion in aggregate trading volume.
JPMorgan research analysts highlighted in April that securing bridge infrastructure and external data feeds remains a critical obstacle for DeFi’s progression toward mainstream institutional acceptance.
