Wall Street began the trading week in cautious mode Monday as market participants prepared for crucial inflation data that may influence the Federal Reserve’s upcoming interest rate policy decisions.
Futures tied to the Nasdaq 100 climbed 0.4%, while S&P 500 futures gained 0.1%. Dow Jones futures edged down marginally, losing less than 0.1%. These modest movements come after all three benchmark indices posted weekly gains.

Trading concluded on an upbeat note Friday following employment data that came in below forecasts, easing concerns that the Federal Reserve might pursue aggressive monetary tightening. The subdued jobs numbers provided market participants with some relief entering the current week.
CPI Report Commands Attention
Wednesday’s Consumer Price Index release stands as the week’s most significant economic event. Market forecasters anticipate the data will show consumer prices increased at a 3.4% annualized pace in the previous month, representing a decline from June’s 3.5% reading.
Federal Reserve policymakers have maintained uncertainty regarding a possible rate adjustment in September. Central bank representatives have emphasized their monitoring of price pressures and readiness to respond if inflation readings exceed projections.
According to Bob Edwards, chief investment officer at Edwards Asset Management, inflation data showing moderation could provide markets with confidence to advance further. However, he cautioned that volatility remains likely.
Energy costs are another consideration for Fed officials, particularly given Middle Eastern tensions. Tehran suggested during the weekend that an arrangement concerning the Strait of Hormuz could be finalized soon.
Energy Markets and Technology Earnings
Brent crude futures hovered around $84 per barrel during Monday’s session. Oil prices have experienced fluctuations as traders monitor negotiations surrounding the Hormuz Strait, a critical passage for international petroleum shipments.
Regarding quarterly results, the majority of S&P 500 constituents have completed their reporting cycles. With more than 80% of firms having disclosed their financial performance, earnings activity remains relatively light this week.
Nevertheless, several prominent artificial intelligence infrastructure providers are scheduled to announce results. Companies such as CoreWeave, Nebius, Cerebras Systems, and Super Micro Computer will present their quarterly figures.
These earnings releases should provide market observers with better visibility into capital expenditures related to AI technology development and data center expansion.
Both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq indices continue trading near record levels. Market direction may hinge significantly on Wednesday morning’s inflation report.
Financial experts and traders will scrutinize the data to determine whether price trends allow the Federal Reserve flexibility to maintain current interest rates at its September policy meeting.
