London-headquartered crypto market maker Wintermute is embarking on an ambitious diversification strategy, committing approximately $1 billion over five years to develop high-frequency trading systems and artificial intelligence infrastructure. This strategic pivot aims to establish significant presence in equities, commodities, and currency markets beyond its cryptocurrency foundation.
According to CEO Evgeny Gaevoy in statements to Bloomberg, traditional financial markets currently contribute roughly 10% to total company revenue. The strategic objective is to push this figure beyond the 50% threshold before 2027 concludes. The company intends to finance this expansion through internally generated profits.
This strategic reorientation emerges against a backdrop of weakening cryptocurrency activity. Daily trading volumes handled by Wintermute have contracted to approximately $10 billion in the current year, representing a significant decline from the $15 billion recorded in 2025. Bitcoin values have similarly retreated to roughly half the October high that exceeded $126,000.
Institutional participants accounted for an unprecedented 72% of spot transaction volume on Wintermute’s over-the-counter platform during the first six months of 2026. The company maintained profitability throughout 2025 and anticipates continuing this performance into the current year.
Taking on Established Market Leaders
Wintermute faces formidable competition from established players including Jane Street, Citadel Securities, and XTX Markets. XTX currently processes over $250 billion in daily transactions and has publicly committed approximately $1.15 billion toward constructing five data facilities in Finland. Jane Street is similarly developing proprietary data center infrastructure.
According to Gaevoy, success in these competitive markets extends well beyond marginal improvements in execution speed. The planned infrastructure will support quantitative model development while expanding computational power, data storage capabilities, and network throughput.
The firm initiated trading in exchange-traded funds and perpetual futures contracts linked to tangible assets during 2025. Round-the-clock access to West Texas Intermediate crude oil was introduced in March, followed by the establishment of a prediction markets division in early 2026.
Regulatory Approval Expands Trading Capabilities
The US subsidiary of Wintermute obtained broker-dealer registration in recent days. This regulatory milestone permits the firm to execute equity and equity option transactions while functioning as an authorized participant in exchange-traded fund operations.
Additionally, the organization plans to expand its New York office beyond the current 17-person team and increase total global staff by roughly 40% during the coming year.
This strategic direction reflects broader industry trends. Major cryptocurrency exchanges including Coinbase, Binance, and Kraken have similarly broadened their offerings to encompass tokenized securities and additional instruments connected to conventional financial markets.
Demonstrating the convergence of cryptocurrency and mainstream technology sectors, Riot Platforms, a Bitcoin mining operation, recently executed a two-decade agreement with Anthropic for 191 megawatts of data center infrastructure at its Rockdale facility, representing approximately $9.1 billion in total value.
During the 2021 cryptocurrency boom cycle, Wintermute generated $582 million in profits, as reported by Forbes.
