A cryptocurrency wallet connected to Clifton Collins, an Irish man convicted on drug-related charges, has transferred digital assets worth approximately $41.5 million. The funds had sat untouched for close to 11 years before the recent movement.
On October 20, blockchain intelligence platform Arkham Intelligence detected the transfer of 500 BTC. According to Arkham’s analysis, the destination wallet belongs to Coinbase Prime, the institutional custody and trading division of the major cryptocurrency exchange.
This transaction represents the fifth such movement of 500 BTC from wallets linked to Collins during 2025. Combined, these transfers total 2,500 BTC, valued at approximately $208 million based on Bitcoin’s current price hovering around $83,157.
Dormant Cryptocurrency Holdings Activated
On-chain data indicates the most recent transfer involved coins that originally entered the wallet during January 2016. Those digital assets remained completely static from that point until now.
Once the 500 BTC reached the receiving address, the funds were divided into 42 separate outputs. Among these were 40 transactions of precisely 10 BTC each.
Previous movements during July and August displayed identical patterns. During those instances, different wallets each forwarded 500 BTC to the same Coinbase Prime-associated address.
Blockchain records don’t indicate whether any Bitcoin was converted to fiat currency. The identity of the party authorizing the October transfer also remains unclear from public data.
The Story Behind the Lost and Recovered Fortune
Clifton Collins previously worked as a security guard before becoming involved in cannabis cultivation. Between 2011 and 2012, he accumulated approximately 6,000 BTC using proceeds from illegal drug operations.
According to reports, Collins divided his holdings across 12 separate wallets, each containing exactly 500 BTC. He stored the private keys required to access these wallets on physical paper, which he concealed inside a fishing rod case.
Following Collins’s imprisonment in 2017, his landlord allegedly discarded his possessions, including the critical fishing rod case. The items reportedly ended up in a landfill site located in County Galway, leading most observers to conclude the Bitcoin was permanently inaccessible.
That assumption proved incorrect in 2026. During March, Ireland’s Criminal Assets Bureau announced it had successfully gained entry to a wallet containing 500 BTC, valued at approximately €30 million at that time. The bureau worked alongside Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre on the operation.
The agency revealed a second 500 BTC recovery in May, followed by a third in July. These official announcements brought the confirmed recovered total to 1,500 BTC.
Europol provided technical assistance and decryption capabilities to investigators. Authorities have not disclosed the methods used to regain control of the wallets.
An additional 500 BTC moved in August, and now the October transfer has occurred. Both transactions exceed the amounts Irish authorities publicly confirmed through July.
Arkham Intelligence assesses that law enforcement represents the most probable entity controlling these movements, given their size and similarity to the documented seizures. Irish officials have not issued public statements regarding their involvement in the October transaction.
Coinbase Prime provides custody solutions and trading infrastructure for institutional clients and high-net-worth individuals. Cryptocurrency transferred to such platforms doesn’t necessarily indicate immediate sale on public markets.
The Criminal Assets Bureau determines the disposition of seized assets on a case-specific basis, following court authorization. The agency hasn’t announced its intentions concerning the most recent 500 BTC transfer.
Roughly 3,500 BTC, worth approximately $291 million, remains stored in wallets that Arkham connects to Collins. At the time of publication, Bitcoin was trading near $81,870, representing a 1.42% decline over the preceding 24-hour period.
