Shares of AeroVironment (AVAV) are changing hands around $142.20 on Monday ā hovering close to the stock’s 52-week nadir of $135.20 ā following the company’s disclosure of expanded details regarding a $117.3 million U.S. Army procurement for its P550 unmanned aircraft platform. The defense contractor currently maintains a market capitalization near $7.17 billion.
While the contract award isn’t fresh news ā the Pentagon initially revealed the firm-fixed-price agreement on March 20 for P550 Long Range Reconnaissance systems ā Monday’s statement provided operational details: specifically, 82 aircraft units procured through a Basic Ordering Agreement via the Army’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems Marketplace framework.
The P550 represents a battery-electric Group 2 vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) drone platform. The system supports payloads reaching 15 pounds and delivers flight endurance extending to five hours per mission.
A defining feature of the platform is its rapid field reconfiguration functionality. Military operators can exchange payloads and battery packs in less than five minutes without requiring specialized tools.
The drone system accommodates diverse operational requirements: intelligence gathering, surveillance and reconnaissance missions, precision targeting, electronic warfare operations, and communications relay functions across air, land, and sea domains.
According to CEO Wahid Nawabi, the P550 was engineered for operational flexibility in high-threat environments, enabling maneuver units to rapidly adjust platform configurations based on evolving mission parameters.
The Army selected AeroVironment through a competitive Call for Solutions mechanism ā reflecting the service’s initiative to accelerate commercial drone technology deployment beyond conventional acquisition timelines.
P550 Reaches Full Production Phase
This procurement represents the initial full-rate production contract for the P550 system, advancing beyond previous developmental or limited-quantity phases.
The acquisition supports the Army’s Battalion Reconnaissance initiative, designed to expand surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities at tactical unit levels.
AeroVironment engineered the P550 utilizing a modular open systems architecture. This design philosophy enables integration of external payloads, datalinks, and mission planning software from third-party vendors.
