Amap’s robotics ambition is closely tied to Alibaba’s broader “spatial intelligence” strategy, which aims to help machines understand and interact with physical environments. The company has been developing what it calls “world models,” including research initiatives such as FantasyWorld, designed to simulate real-world spatial environments for AI training.
This shift represents a major evolution for Amap, which recently established an embodied intelligence unit in early 2026. The division has already rolled out an embodied navigation foundation model, showing how quickly Alibaba is moving from digital mapping services into real-world robotics applications.
Competitive Robotics Landscape Intensifies
Alibaba is entering a crowded and fast-growing field that includes competitors such as Unitree, Agibot, and Ant Group. These companies are racing to commercialize quadruped and humanoid robots, even as long-term demand remains uncertain.
Consumer enthusiasm, however, has helped drive momentum in the sector. For instance, Unitree’s Go2 robot dog is priced at roughly $1,600, making it one of the more accessible advanced robotics products on the market. The affordability of such devices has contributed to rising consumer interest and increased investment flows into robotics startups.
At the same time, industry players are aggressively expanding hiring and R&D efforts, reflecting confidence that embodied AI could become a major technology category over the next decade.
Market Growth Signals Strong Potential
Despite uncertainty around real-world adoption, market forecasts suggest significant upside potential for quadruped robotics. Industry estimates place the global quadruped robot market at approximately $3.45 billion in 2025, with projections suggesting it could grow beyond $11.26 billion by 2032.
Chinese robotics firm UBTech has also reported rapid expansion, with revenue from humanoid robotics and related services reaching 820 million yuan (around $119 million) in 2025. The company additionally recorded a sharp increase in robot sales, underscoring accelerating demand within the sector.
Alibaba’s broader vision extends beyond standalone robots. The company has previously outlined an “Amap-AI Inside” ecosystem that could integrate spatial intelligence into smart vehicles, augmented reality devices, and other connected systems. However, it has not formally described this as a licensable platform.
