Shares of Alphabet (GOOGL) advanced 1.51% during Monday’s trading session after The Information disclosed that Google is working on an innovative server processor dubbed ‘Frozen v2.’
The specialized processor is engineered to execute Gemini AI operations with significantly greater efficiency by hardwiring specific model components permanently into the chip architecture. This methodology minimizes computational overhead and data transfer requirements when processing user requests.
Internal engineering teams at Google estimate the processor could generate between six and ten times more tokens per watt when compared to the company’s existing tensor processing units, as detailed in the report.
In a statement to CNBC, Google emphasized that its teams are “constantly researching and experimenting with new innovations” while co-designing hardware and software “from the ground up” to deliver optimal performance for practical applications.
Addressing Critical Compute Capacity Challenges
The development initiative responds to significant internal computing resource limitations. These constraints have generated friction within Google and allegedly forced Google Cloud to decline prospective enterprise customers.
In a notable move last month, Google committed to paying SpaceX approximately $1 billion monthly to supplement its infrastructure and fulfill enterprise service obligations.
Frozen v2 is intended to complement Google’s current TPU portfolio rather than serve as a replacement ā functioning as a purpose-built solution for targeted workloads.
The compromise involves reduced adaptability. The processor would be compatible exclusively with subsequent Gemini iterations if Google maintains consistent core architecture. Google currently considers this partly an experimental endeavor and doesn’t intend to manufacture it at TPU production volumes.
The rollout is scheduled for 2028, although engineering teams continue refining the specifications.
Mounting Competitive Challenges
This processor announcement arrives as Google confronts substantial obstacles in artificial intelligence. The upcoming Gemini Pro version has been postponed after underperforming against internal benchmarks, Bloomberg reported.
Google has also experienced departures of multiple senior research personnel to competing organizations in recent months.
Chinese AI platforms are capturing increased adoption among American enterprises, now representing 45% of token consumption by U.S. companies. Recent launches from Moonshot AI and Alibaba over the weekend continue closing the performance differential.
