At its annual Google I/O developer conference on Tuesday, the company presented a comprehensive transformation of its Search offering, characterizing it as the most significant evolution since the platform’s inception over two decades ago. GOOGL shares settled at $384.90, declining 2.09% during regular trading, before gaining 0.39% in pre-market activity.
The flagship element of this announcement involves a completely reimagined Search interface, now powered by Gemini 3.5 Flash. This new search box features dynamic expansion capabilities and supports multiple input formats including text, images, documents, video content, and even Chrome browser tabs.
The platform now enables users to engage in continuous conversational exchanges directly within AI Overview panels, transitioning smoothly into AI Mode. According to the company, contextual information persists throughout these interactive sessions.
The standout innovation involves introducing “information agents.” These autonomous background processes continuously scan online content and deliver notifications when user-defined criteria are satisfied.
Demonstration scenarios included: an agent tracking announcements for a preferred athlete’s footwear partnership, and another filtering rental property listings based on customized requirements. Both operate autonomously without requiring manual user intervention.
These information agents will become available initially to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscription tiers during the summer months.
Strong Performance Metrics Validate Strategy
This product launch follows impressive first-quarter performance. Google‘s Search and related advertising income reached $60.4 billion, marking a 19% year-over-year growth. Total company revenue registered at $109.9 billion.
AI Mode, introduced twelve months ago, has already surpassed 1 billion monthly active users. Query volumes have experienced exponential growth, doubling quarterly since introduction, with the most recent quarter achieving record-breaking Search query numbers.
The company is additionally integrating agentic coding functionality into Search. This capability enables Search to dynamically generate customized dashboards, monitoring tools, and lightweight applications in direct response to user inquiries. One illustration provided was a comprehensive fitness and nutrition tracker that adapts to personal schedules, gym access, and local climate conditions.
These “generative UI” features will roll out to all users without charge this summer.
Gemini Platform Receives Major Updates
Along with Search enhancements, Gemini is receiving its own significant updates. The application now features refreshed design elements, Gemini Live conversational interface, and a Daily Brief function that synchronizes with Gmail and Calendar to provide personalized day summaries.
Gemini Spark, a newly introduced personal assistant agent, extends these capabilities further. It can analyze credit card transactions for unexpected charges or track school communication channels for upcoming assignment deadlines. Users maintain control over application permissions for Spark, and the agent seeks approval before executing financial transactions or sending communications.
Gemini now serves 900 million monthly active users, representing substantial growth from 400 million one year prior.
This expansion occurs amid intensifying competitive pressures. OpenAI disclosed 900 million weekly active users in February alongside more than 50 million paid subscribers.
Google announced that Personal Intelligence within AI Mode is expanding availability to nearly 200 nations across 98 languages, accessible without subscription requirements.
