In a significant content acquisition, Amazon has finalized a multi-year partnership with Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Entertainment, granting its Wondery podcast division exclusive distribution and advertising control over “The Oprah Podcast” across both audio and video platforms.
The partnership was unveiled on Monday, April 27, with both parties declining to reveal the financial parameters of the agreement.
The podcast features Winfrey exploring subjects ranging from personal relationships to financial wellness through conversations with both prominent cultural personalities and ordinary individuals. Notable previous participants include tennis champion Serena Williams, actor Hugh Jackman, celebrity chef Ina Garten, and organizational psychologist Adam Grant.
Commencing this summer, the program will double its output to two fresh episodes weekly. Beginning in July, Wondery will handle distribution through Amazon’s ecosystem, including Prime Video and Amazon Music platforms.
The podcast will remain accessible on YouTube and additional podcast distribution channels in conjunction with its new Amazon partnership.
Comprehensive Content Integration
This partnership extends well beyond podcast distribution alone. The agreement incorporates rights related to “The Oprah Winfrey Show” content archive, “Oprah’s Book Club,” and “Oprah’s Favorite Things.”
This positions Amazon to integrate Winfrey’s content throughout its audio streaming, video platforms, e-commerce operations, and advertising networks — creating a more comprehensive arrangement than typical podcast licensing agreements.
Winfrey expressed that the partnership enables her to “continue the work I feel called to do – opening the door for conversations that matter.”
Expanding Wondery’s Content Library
Amazon continues expanding its Wondery portfolio as competition intensifies in the podcast industry. Key competitors include Spotify (SPOT) and Alphabet’s GOOGL) YouTube.
The Oprah Podcast will complement Wondery’s current programming lineup, which features shows like “New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce” and “Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard.”
Podcasting has emerged as a critical expansion sector for media and technology corporations as advertising dollars migrate toward on-demand audio and video platforms.
Amazon ($AMZN) shares traded down 0.59%, losing $1.55 to reach $262.44 at the time this report was compiled.
