A California-headquartered nuclear energy startup, Antares Nuclear, has secured $470 million in financing to develop compact reactors designed for deployment at military installations across the United States. Leading the investment round were venture firms Paradigm and Caffeinated Capital.
The financing package comprises $370 million in equity capital alongside $100 million in debt instruments. Additional participants in the funding round include Point72 Ventures, Shine Capital, and Industrious Ventures.
Established in 2023, Antares maintains operational facilities across three locations: Torrance, California; Idaho Falls, Idaho; and Aiken, South Carolina. The venture specializes in developing microreactor technology engineered to operate safely for extended periods without requiring refueling.
In June, Antares achieved a significant technical breakthrough when its Mark-0 reactor reached criticality at Idaho National Laboratory, successfully initiating and maintaining a self-sustaining nuclear fission chain reaction.
This accomplishment positioned Antares as the first private company to achieve criticality with a non-light-water reactor design in the United States in more than four decades. While the demonstration produced thermal energy, it did not yet generate electrical power.
Mark-1 System Targeted for 2027 Completion
The company’s subsequent development phase involves the Mark-1 reactor, engineered specifically for electrical power generation. Antares projects this system will be operational by 2027.
The first commercial deployments are scheduled for US Air Force bases starting in 2028. Antares has obtained formal contracts to construct reactors through the Department of Defense’s Advanced Nuclear Power for Installations program.
An executive order issued under the Trump administration established a September 30, 2028 deadline requiring the Pentagon to activate a nuclear reactor at a domestic military installation. Antares represents one of several contractors pursuing this objective.
The company also participates in a Department of Energy initiative aimed at accelerating nuclear power deployment timelines. Despite recent progress, the technology remains unproven at commercial scale, with no microreactors currently operational within the United States.
Surging Power Needs Fuel Nuclear Sector Investment
An expanding cohort of nuclear energy ventures is competing to commercialize compact reactor designs. Electricity consumption has accelerated dramatically, driven largely by expanding artificial intelligence computing infrastructure.
Nuclear developers are marketing their solutions as carbon-free, dependable alternatives for meeting escalating energy requirements. Microreactors offer particular advantages for isolated or security-sensitive environments such as defense installations.
Antares emphasizes that its reactor designs can function autonomously without requiring on-site fuel replacement. The organization is currently transitioning from laboratory validation to operational deployment.
Armed with $470 million in new financing and established deployment schedules, Antares ranks among the most well-capitalized companies in the microreactor sector. The company’s next critical milestone arrives with the Mark-1 system anticipated in the coming year.
