Jesse Pollak, the architect behind Base, has relinquished his leadership role at the Base App after conceding his social-first adoption strategy fundamentally missed the mark.
For approximately two years, Pollak championed a vision centered on creator-focused infrastructure, content distribution platforms, and messaging applications ā partnerships with Farcaster, Zora, and various mini applications were central to this approach ā believing these would serve as gateways for mainstream crypto adoption.
The strategy ultimately failed. In a candid statement on X, Pollak described how the social marketplace “completely fell apart.”
“I was definitively wrong,” he acknowledged.
This concentration on social functionality caused Base to fall significantly behind in two rapidly expanding sectors: prediction markets and perpetual futures trading.
According to Dune Analytics metrics, Limitless, Base’s native prediction market platform, captured merely 0.5% of aggregate monthly notional volume across the entire prediction market landscape in July.
Avantis, the network’s perpetual decentralized exchange, ranked 18th measured by 30-day notional trading volume, per DefiLlama data.
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong reinforced this acknowledgment, stating that content tokens “proved ineffective.”
“We messed up, time to turn the page,” Armstrong declared Monday.
In February, Base discontinued both its Creator Rewards initiative and the Farcaster-integrated social feed. The Creator Rewards system, which launched in July 2025, was engineered to incentivize user participation on the Ethereum layer-2 infrastructure.
Leadership Transition: Cobie Takes Control as Base Reorients Toward Finance
Pollak is transferring Base App leadership responsibilities to Jordan Fish, widely recognized in cryptocurrency communities as “Cobie.” Fish will spearhead efforts to transform the Base App into “the best damn app for onchain,” according to Pollak’s announcement.
Fish established Echo, a community-driven fundraising platform that [[LINK_START_0]]Coinbase[[LINK_END_0]] purchased for $375 million in the previous year.
Pollak will redirect his attention toward developing Base’s underlying blockchain architecture, with an objective of establishing it as “the blockchain for global finance.”
This strategic realignment positions trading infrastructure, payment systems, and AI agents as the cornerstone of Base’s future trajectory.
Last week, Base deployed its B20 token standard to mainnet. This implementation introduces an indigenous framework supporting stablecoins, tokenized real-world assets, and additional fungible token categories.
In May, Base unveiled Base MCP, an integration tool enabling users to execute crypto operations directly through AI model chat interfaces, with connectivity to protocols including Uniswap, Morpho, and Aerodrome.
In April, Base published its 2026 strategic roadmap emphasizing real-world asset tokenization, stablecoin infrastructure, and prediction market development.
“We’re going to build Base into the blockchain for global finance and do everything we can to be the place that the world’s money settles over the next century,” Pollak stated Wednesday.
