Key Highlights
- Businesses using Coinbase can now receive USDC payments directly from AI agents through the x402 protocol
- The x402 framework debuted in May 2025, facilitating stablecoin transactions via HTTP connections
- Automated trading features allow users to set conditions and execute cryptocurrency trades automatically
- Developers can integrate x402 payment capabilities into APIs using a simple three-line SDK
- AI agent activity on Coinbase’s Base documentation exceeded human visitors for the first time last month
Coinbase has introduced a suite of features enabling businesses to receive cryptocurrency payments from artificial intelligence agents using USDC, the dollar-pegged stablecoin. The functionality became available to Coinbase Business customers this week.
These transactions operate through the x402 protocol, a payment standard that Coinbase created and unveiled in May 2025. The protocol enables stablecoin transactions to occur via HTTP, effectively allowing AI agents to purchase services using the same infrastructure humans use for online credit card payments.
According to Sid Coelho-Prabhu, who heads Coinbase Business, the development represents creating a payment interface for the emerging agent-driven economy. AI agents can independently establish wallets, access documentation, and begin making transactions without requiring businesses to implement specialized infrastructure.
Transaction processing occurs through Coinbase Payments with settlement in USDC. Companies can accept these payments without developing custom integration solutions.
Automated Trading Features Debut for Platform Users
The exchange has simultaneously launched AI-powered trading capabilities for its user base. These features enable individuals to establish parameters using conversational language ā for instance, “purchase ETH when it drops 5%” ā allowing an automated agent to track markets and execute trades accordingly.
A real-time order dashboard provides users with visibility into an agent’s pending and active transactions, displaying details including status, pricing, and volume. The system utilizes identical WebSocket market feeds employed by professional trading operations.
This development democratizes sophisticated market surveillance capabilities that previously required specialized tools or programming expertise.
New Software Development Kit for Builders
On the development front, Coinbase has published an x402 software development kit via its Developer Platform. The toolkit enables programmers to implement x402 payment functionality into any API, MCP server, or online service with merely three lines of code.
This streamlines the process for developers creating applications designed to interact with AI agents conducting financial transactions.
Highlighting increasing adoption, Coinbase revealed that automated agent traffic on its Base technical documentation surpassed human visitors last month for the first time. The company emphasized that existing internet payment systems were designed with the assumption of human interaction ā an assumption that no longer reflects current reality.
This launch aligns with broader industry movements. Multiple payment processors and cryptocurrency platforms are positioning stablecoins as the foundational financial layer for AI agents conducting online commerce.
Coinbase has not disclosed specific pricing structures for these business tools beyond standard Payments infrastructure fees.
