Polygon Labs has successfully finalized its acquisition of Coinme, providing the blockchain infrastructure company with a compliant framework for facilitating conversions between traditional US currency and cryptocurrency assets.
The company made the announcement public on Wednesday, October 14. According to Polygon, its American payments division has established regulatory authorization spanning 48 jurisdictions.
This nationwide reach is achieved through a combination of 37 state-issued money transmitter licenses alongside 11 state exemptions. Additionally, the operation holds registration status with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) under the money services business classification.
Coinme’s Assets and Infrastructure
Coinme operates as a regulated cryptocurrency exchange with physical cash conversion capabilities. The platform enables customers to purchase and liquidate digital currencies through multiple methods including physical cash, debit card transactions, and direct bank transfers.
At the time of the initial deal announcement, Coinme boasted a user base exceeding one million individuals. The company’s retail footprint extended to approximately 50,000 physical locations nationwide, based on Polygon’s disclosures.
Polygon initially disclosed its intention to acquire Coinme back in January. Simultaneously, the company announced a separate agreement to purchase Sequence, which specializes in wallet infrastructure technology. The combined valuation of both transactions exceeded $250 million.
During that same period, Polygon Labs implemented workforce reductions. Chief Executive Officer Marc Boiron explained the restructuring was necessary to transform the organization into a “leading payments-focused blockchain company.”
Polygon functions as a scaling solution for the Ethereum network. The newly acquired Coinme licenses now underpin its payment infrastructure platform, branded as Open Money Stack.
Open Money Stack Platform Architecture
Open Money Stack integrates multiple financial services layers: digital wallet technology, payment routing systems, blockchain-based settlement mechanisms, and traditional banking interfaces. According to Polygon, enterprises can leverage this unified system to manage complete payment lifecycles.
The workflow begins when a company receives US dollar payments via bank transfers, card networks, or cash deposits. These funds can subsequently settle on blockchain infrastructure before being disbursed in recipients’ local currencies.
Polygon emphasizes that businesses accomplish these operations through a single integration point, eliminating the complexity of coordinating multiple infrastructure vendors.
Four organizations represent the platform’s inaugural commercial users: Tazapay, Mesh, Toku, and Kira.
Tazapay operates in the cross-border payments sector, serving over 1,000 enterprises and financial technology companies across more than 30 nations. The firm is integrating Polygon’s wallet infrastructure and currency exchange capabilities.
Mesh functions as a cryptocurrency payment network connecting upwards of 300 wallets, exchanges, and financial service providers. The company is implementing Polygon’s solutions that enable users to fund digital asset transactions using traditional fiat currency.
Toku delivers global payroll services and is deploying Polygon’s wallet and distribution tools to enable employees to receive compensation in stablecoins and convert to their local currency.
Kira represents an artificial intelligence-enhanced financial services platform. The company utilizes Open Money Stack to provide stablecoin options alongside conventional US banking rails, including ACH, Fedwire, and FedNow payment systems.
Rahul Shinghal, who co-founded and leads Tazapay as CEO, commented that Open Money Stack provides enterprises with “a more direct route between stablecoins and local currency.”
