Shares of D-Wave Quantum (QBTS) climbed 7.1% during Monday’s premarket session following the announcement of a strengthened collaboration with telecommunications leader AT&T (T).
The telecommunications provider will integrate D-Wave’s annealing quantum computing systems into expanded segments of its network infrastructure, specifically targeting outage identification and traffic flow optimization.
The partnership between the two organizations isn’t new. AT&T had already been utilizing D-Wave’s platform on a smaller scale, notably achieving a dramatic time reduction in network optimizationāslashing processing time from 60 minutes down to just 15 seconds.
Monday’s announcement represents a significant escalation in AT&T’s quantum computing commitment. The company estimates this technology deployment could prevent approximately 12 million customer hours of network downtime.
The announcement created positive momentum throughout the quantum computing industry. IonQ (IONQ) shares advanced 3.8%, Rigetti Computing (RGTI) climbed 3.4%, while Quantinuum (QNT) increased 2.8%.
QBTS shares had posted double-digit percentage gains earlier in the trading session before moderating to the 7.1% increase.
Real-World Applications Demonstrate Market Readiness
For D-Wave, securing enterprise-level partnerships like this represents a critical component of its expansion strategy. The quantum computing firm has publicly acknowledged similar collaborations with Anduril and Davidson Technologies.
Chief Executive Alan Baratz noted that Anduril’s participation at D-Wave’s user conference this year “really changed the view of the U.S. government.”
AT&T ranks among the largest telecommunications providers in the United States, serving approximately 74 million postpaid subscribers and 17 million prepaid accounts. Its endorsement provides meaningful validation for investors tracking practical quantum computing deployment.
D-Wave established itself as a pioneer in annealing quantum computing, a specialized architecture designed for solving optimization challenges. The company maintains its focus on this specialized segment even as competition intensifies across the quantum landscape.
Strategic Acquisition Positions D-Wave for Gate-Model Computing
The company’s strategic vision extends beyond annealing systems. D-Wave completed its acquisition of Quantum Circuits this year, signaling its re-entry into gate-based quantum computingāthe methodology employed by competitors such as IBM.
This strategic acquisition was initially disclosed in 2021 before being finalized more recently.
D-Wave published a comprehensive technical roadmap for gate-model architectures in June. The company projects achieving systems capable of executing more than one million operations by 2032.
Gate-model quantum computers offer greater versatility across diverse problem categories, positioning D-Wave to capture a larger portion of the expanding quantum computing marketplace.
