Bitcoin confronts downward pressure following the United States Federal Reserve’s decision to maintain interest rates while expressing continued apprehension regarding inflation dynamics.
The central bank’s Wednesday decision resulted in a 10-2 vote preserving the benchmark rate within the 3.75% to 4% corridor. Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack dissented, advocating for a 25-basis-point increase.
Fed Chair Kevin Warsh highlighted that inflation remains elevated relative to the central bank’s 2% objective. “Americans… are still dealing with inflation that has been running above the Committee’s objective for close to 6 years,” he stated.
Iggy Ioppe, chief investment officer at tokenization platform Theo, noted that markets had anticipated the hold. “Markets had the hold priced, but not the hawkish tone,” he told Cointelegraph.
Ioppe observed that with prevailing rates, Bitcoin must offer competitive returns against a nearly 4% risk-free alternative.
Market Participants Anticipate December Rate Adjustment
CME FedWatch data indicates traders pricing in a 78.4% probability of a quarter-point increase by December. Market expectations also reflect a 67.3% likelihood of at least one hike materializing by March.
Warsh refrained from previewing the Fed’s stance at its Dec. 8-9 gathering. “A lot of things can happen,” he remarked during a press conference.
Bitget analyst Lewis Huang suggested Bitcoin’s trajectory may hinge less on Federal Reserve actions directly. He identified Treasury yields, the US dollar index, and broader risk appetite as primary catalysts.
Sygnum Bank chief investment officer Fabian Dori highlighted Thursday’s personal consumption expenditures (PCE) inflation release as the next critical data point. He noted that Magnificent 7 earnings results will reveal whether artificial intelligence investment is translating into revenue growth.
Ian Weisberger, CEO of CoinRoutes, referenced a packed calendar of market events. He enumerated the Fed decision, technology sector earnings, $12 billion in Bitcoin options reaching expiration Friday, and approaching US midterm elections.
Weisberger indicated that investors are evaluating risk-adjusted returns and currently perceive BTC as offering insufficient compensation for its volatility. He observed that certain alternative cryptocurrencies, including Hyperliquid and ZEC, have delivered strong performance in recent months.
Large Holder Activity Reveals Contradictory Positioning
Blockchain analytics reveal major holders executing opposing strategies. Two significant addresses transferred $200 million worth of BTC to centralized exchanges during the past 24 hours, typically indicating potential selling pressure.
Glassnode data shows that Hyperliquid whales established a net short position on Bitcoin for the first time since March. These market participants maintained long exposure near the market trough but reversed their stance last week.
Countervailing indicators point toward accumulation. Santiment documented 14,942 BTC departing exchanges, representing the largest single outflow recorded in five weeks.
Within the identical time period, one whale entity acquired 11,326 BTC valued at approximately $903 million.

Bitcoin has established a consolidation pattern around the $80,000 level and recently advanced above $81,000.
The PCE inflation report and GDP figures are scheduled for Thursday release, with Friday bringing the expiration of $12 billion in Bitcoin options contracts.
