TLDR
- Federal government-linked wallets transferred 833.6 BTC valued at $71.56 million to Coinbase Prime, blockchain analyst EmberCN reports.
- The same addresses also sent 40,285 BNB worth $31.63 million across multiple wallet addresses.
- Moving assets to Coinbase Prime doesn’t necessarily indicate a sale, as the platform provides both custody services and trading capabilities.
- An executive order from March 2025 prohibits the sale of Bitcoin placed in the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.
- No government agency has publicly confirmed any sale related to this recent transaction.
Federal government-linked cryptocurrency wallets have transferred approximately $103 million in digital assets, on-chain analyst EmberCN has revealed. The transactions consisted of 833.6 BTC valued at $71.56 million and 40,285 BNB worth $31.63 million.
The Bitcoin portion was directed to Coinbase Prime. Meanwhile, the BNB traveled through multiple intermediary addresses before arriving at a destination wallet beginning with 0xBE7 and concluding with 81E.
According to EmberCN’s analysis, wallets associated with the US government continue to hold approximately $28 billion in cryptocurrency holdings. The vast majority consists of Bitcoin, with an estimated 324,000 BTC representing $27.7 billion of that total.
Does the Transfer Mean a Bitcoin Sale?
The transfer to Coinbase Prime has sparked speculation about a potential liquidation, given that the exchange facilitates trading operations. Yet the blockchain transaction data alone cannot verify whether any actual sale occurred.
The US Marshals Service selected Coinbase Prime in July 2024 to handle custody and trading operations for substantial digital asset holdings confiscated through federal criminal proceedings. Assets deposited to this platform can either remain in storage or be liquidated.
A comparable situation arose in July, when federal wallets transferred nearly $297 million in confiscated Bitcoin and Ether to Coinbase Prime. Those movements never resulted in any verified sale.
President Donald Trump issued an executive order in March 2025 establishing the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. The directive simultaneously created a US Digital Asset Stockpile for alternative cryptocurrencies.
The executive order explicitly states that Bitcoin fully forfeited and allocated to the reserve “shall not be sold.” This restriction doesn’t apply universally to every coin in federal custody, as certain holdings remain subject to ongoing court proceedings or victim restitution requirements.
Alternative cryptocurrencies like BNB may be placed into the Digital Asset Stockpile. Within that framework, the Treasury secretary maintains discretion over management decisions according to current legal authority.
How Bitcoin Reacted to Past Government Transfers
Previous federal transfers to Coinbase have occasionally triggered brief price corrections. In June 2024, authorities relocated 3,940 BTC valued at approximately $240 million, and Bitcoin’s price declined roughly 2%.
In August 2024, an additional 10,000 BTC worth around $594 million was sent to Coinbase Prime. Bitcoin dropped 3.6%, although the downturn had already started before the transfer completed.
In July 2024, a federal wallet moved about $2 billion in Bitcoin, resulting in approximately a 1% price decrease. In December, another address relocated nearly 20,000 BTC valued at roughly $1.92 billion.
The government has conducted verified Bitcoin liquidations previously. In March 2023, authorities sold 9,861 BTC connected to Silk Road for approximately $216 million, which was subsequently documented in court records.
In June, government-controlled wallets moved confiscated FTX and Alameda assets worth nearly $984,000, with at least $768,000 reaching Coinbase Prime. Arkham Intelligence indicated those funds were designated to assist FTX creditor repayment.
No federal department has publicly disclosed a sale connected to the latest 833.6 BTC movement. Verification of any liquidation would require additional transaction evidence or an official statement from government authorities or Coinbase.
