Crypto.com has announced it will discontinue consumer app operations in Hong Kong starting Feb. 1, 2027. The platform attributed this decision to evolving regulatory requirements in the territory.
The exchange’s efforts to secure licensing for its institutional trading infrastructure remain ongoing. This professional-grade platform operates independently from the retail-facing application being discontinued.
Crypto.com confirmed the shutdown to Bloomberg on Monday. The platform indicated that impacted customers had received prior notification regarding the operational changes.
Account Closure Process Initiated for Retail Customers
Affected users will be provided with detailed guidance for closing their accounts. The platform will also supply withdrawal procedures to help customers access their holdings before operations cease.
Local news outlet HK01 reported that email communications had been dispatched to Hong Kong-based users explaining the closure. The messages referenced regulatory developments as the driving factor behind the withdrawal.
The February deadline provides approximately three months for users to complete necessary actions. All consumer app functionality will be discontinued when the new year begins.
Neither the total number of affected Hong Kong customers nor the precise regulatory measures triggering the decision were disclosed in available reports.
The retail application in Hong Kong operates under Foris DAX MT Limited. This corporate entity manages the consumer-facing services that will be discontinued.
Meanwhile, Foris DAX HK Limited oversees the licensing pursuit. This separate entity is working to obtain authorization for operating a virtual asset trading platform (VATP) in the jurisdiction.
Nearly Three-Year Licensing Review Remains Unresolved
Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission maintains a publicly accessible registry of cryptocurrency trading platforms. The SFC serves as the primary regulatory authority governing platform licensing throughout Hong Kong.
According to official records, Foris DAX HK Limited filed its VATP license request on Feb. 9, 2024. Nearly three years have elapsed since that initial submission.
The entity currently carries a “deemed-to-be-licensed” designation on the registry. This provisional classification represents a transitional stage rather than complete regulatory authorization.
Hong Kong implemented its virtual asset trading platform licensing framework on June 1, 2023. Pre-existing platforms in the territory received an opportunity to submit applications during a transitional window.
The “deemed-to-be-licensed” designation permits platforms to maintain operations during the SFC’s evaluation process. Final regulatory approval is still required before a platform achieves fully licensed status.
Cointelegraph reached out to Crypto.com for additional commentary on the shutdown. No response was received prior to publication.
In its statement to Bloomberg, Crypto.com emphasized its commitment to advancing the license application. The application pertains specifically to Crypto.com Exchange, its institutional-grade platform, which operates separately from the consumer app being shuttered.
