Payward, the organization behind cryptocurrency platform Kraken, is executing an ambitious transformation into a comprehensive financial services infrastructure company. According to Co-CEO Arjun Sethi, the vision centers on creating unified operations with consolidated platforms, shared balance sheets, and integrated regulatory frameworks instead of maintaining disconnected business units.
The strategic roadmap divides operations into four distinct verticals: the Kraken trading platform, banking solutions, wealth management services, and an enterprise-focused division known as Payward Services.
The Kraken exchange currently serves approximately 6.6 million active funded user accounts, with total assets under custody ranging from $40 billion to $50 billion. The platform maintains operations across more than 190 nations and jurisdictions worldwide.
Strategic Acquisitions Deliver Compliance and Market Access
Rather than developing capabilities organically, Payward has pursued an aggressive acquisition strategy totaling billions of dollars. The company announced its agreement to purchase futures trading platform NinjaTrader for $1.5 billion in March 2025.
This acquisition delivered immediately operational regulated futures infrastructure to the portfolio. Following completion, NinjaTrader continued functioning as an independent platform under Payward ownership.
The company subsequently agreed to acquire Bitnomial through a combination of cash and equity valued at up to $550 million. Bitnomial possessed three distinct regulatory registrations granted by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, encompassing exchange operations, clearing services, and brokerage functions.
This transaction reached completion on May 1, 2026. According to company statements, Bitnomial’s technical systems now power regulated futures contracts and margin trading products available to U.S. customers.
In September, Payward revealed plans to launch perpetual futures products built on Hyperliquid’s underlying technology for qualified users, subject to regulatory clearance. These contracts would utilize Bitnomial’s infrastructure for clearing and settlement processes.
Traditional Exchange Giants Join Tokenized Securities Initiative
Payward’s expansion into blockchain-based equities has attracted collaboration from two prominent traditional exchange operators. On September 10, Nasdaq revealed a $100 million equity investment in Payward.
This investment supports joint development of Nasdaq Equity Tokens, a product targeting a second-quarter 2027 market debut. The funding round established Payward’s valuation at $21 billion.
A separate collaboration emerged with the London Stock Exchange. The British exchange operator intends to introduce xStocks—blockchain-represented versions of publicly traded securities and investment funds—through a dedicated platform designated LSE 24, with launch timing set for 2027.
Sethi emphasized that collaborating with established exchange operators provides critical value through their accumulated regulatory expertise and listing framework experience spanning multiple decades. He characterized this institutional knowledge as the partnership’s primary benefit.
Through Payward Services, the company now licenses its proprietary technology stack to external organizations. During a CoinDesk interview, company representatives indicated at least 25 firms were actively developing products using this infrastructure, with Hyperliquid among the notable users.
Payward finalized its acquisition of stablecoin payment processor Reap in July. That same month brought an agreement to purchase wallet technology from Magic Labs, a platform serving approximately 60 million users globally.
Financial results showed adjusted revenue of $508 million for Q2 2026, representing 17% growth versus the prior year period. Adjusted EBITDA totaled $23 million across the same timeframe.
Overall platform transaction volume decreased 18% year-over-year to $310 billion as cryptocurrency trading activity moderated. Meanwhile, derivatives trading and tokenized equity transactions posted gains.
The company submitted confidential public offering documentation in November 2025. Sethi indicated that an initial public offering would not occur before Q2 2027 at the earliest, noting that the company’s expansion strategy does not depend on raising public market capital.
