JPMorgan Chase has deployed its JPM Coin deposit instrument on the Ethereum blockchain. The Wall Street banking institution activated the token on Ethereum’s primary network Monday, Oct. 19, exclusively for its institutional clientele.
Prior to this expansion, JPM Coin functioned solely on Base, an Ethereum Layer 2 infrastructure developed by Coinbase Global.
Institutional participants gained access to the token on Base starting Nov. 12, 2025. That deployment emerged from pilot testing that commenced in June 2025.
Emma Landriault, who leads Kinexys Labs, explained to Bloomberg that the institution selected Ethereum because of its liquidity depth and widespread adoption among institutional market participants. Kinexys operates as the bank’s dedicated blockchain division.
Mechanics of the JPM Coin System
The banking institution emphasizes that the instrument differs from both cryptocurrencies and stablecoins. Each unit corresponds to one U.S. dollar maintained in a JPMorgan deposit account.
Token holders face identical risk exposure as traditional bank depositors. In contrast, stablecoins like USDC originate from private corporations and maintain backing through cash holdings and government securities reserves.
Authorized institutions transfer funds into a blockchain-enabled deposit facility and transform them into digital tokens. These instruments then serve various purposes including vendor payments, trade settlements, or collateral posting.
Participants retain full redemption flexibility with no mandatory holding periods. Account transfers between conventional and blockchain-based systems experience brief pauses each Saturday between 3 and 6 p.m. Eastern Time.
Access and Eligibility
Ethereum operates as a permissionless network, making transaction data publicly visible. Nevertheless, only institutions approved through the bank’s vetting process can possess or transfer the token.
This deployment excludes any retail component. The institution also cautioned that similarly named tokens at alternative addresses maintain no connection to JPMorgan.
The deposit instrument now coexists on the same infrastructure as two JPMorgan tokenized money market products. My OnChain Net Yield Fund, known as MONY, debuted on Ethereum in December 2025. The JPMorgan OnChain Liquidity-Token Money Market Fund, designated JLTXX, followed in May 2026.
The official statement does not outline mechanisms for utilizing JPM Coin to purchase or liquidate positions in either fund. JPMorgan identifies programmable treasury management through client wallet systems as one potential application.
Kinexys reports processing volume exceeding $4 trillion since operations began, translating to approximately $7 billion in daily throughput.
JPMorgan handles roughly $12 trillion in payment flows each day, per Bloomberg data. The institution has not disclosed what portion of Kinexys volume originates from JPM Coin activity on public blockchain networks.
The GENIUS Act, enacted in 2025, prohibits stablecoin providers from distributing interest payments. Banking industry representatives have referenced Treasury Department projections suggesting up to $6.6 trillion in deposits could migrate to stablecoin alternatives.
In his April communication to shareholders, CEO Jamie Dimon noted the emergence of blockchain-powered competitive threats. He emphasized the necessity of implementing proprietary blockchain solutions.
Citi, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo number among more than a dozen financial institutions developing a collaborative infrastructure for tokenized deposit systems, according to Wall Street Journal reporting.
Ether exchanged near $2,386 when the announcement occurred, declining 2% across the preceding 24-hour period. Kinexys and Digital Asset have disclosed intentions to integrate JPM Coin with the Canton Network in subsequent phases.
